Real Betis vs Athletic Club


Real Betis and Athletic are two strong candidates for 
the final Champions League place this season in LaLiga so this is 
a big game to kick things off again. 


Both sides boast really strong home records but have been less 
convincing away and I think this game being played at the 
Benito Villamarin may just give Betis the edge.


None of their key attacking players were involved in the World Cup. 


Borja Iglesias and Sergio Canales were perhaps unfortunate to 
miss out on a Spain call-up while Nabil Fekor hasn’t 
featured for France since 2020. 


Juanmi is also fit again now so they should be at full strength in the 
final third, which certainly wasn’t the case when they lost to Valencia 
in their last game before the break with only 
one of those four players available.


Betis have played six friendly matches during the World Cup 
break and while they only won one, it should have helped them to 
maintain their fitness levels and be ready for this game. 


Overall, they have a bit more in terms of creativity and quality 
on the ball than Athletic and I’d expect them to be the dominant team 
in terms of possession and also the one most likely to 
play on the front foot.


In a tough game like this, Athletic Club will most likely look to play 
on the break using the pace of the Williams brothers, 
who both featured at the World Cup albeit for different countries. 


The Basque side are the third highest scorers in LaLiga this season 
but I do have some doubts as to whether they can 
truly keep that kind of free-scoring record going.


Iñaki Williams is certainly not a clinical player and while Nico has 
added goals and assists to his game this season, 
he is still a very young player who may be inconsistent. 


Their main striker in recent games has been Gorka Guruzeta and 
while he has done well, his career goalscoring record at a lower 
level suggests he will not be able to keep up his current strike-rate.
