Villarreal vs Real Madrid


Real Madrid travel to the new look Estadio de la Cerámica 
this weekend and this has the potential to be a tough game 
for the defending champions against improving opponents. 


After a really difficult start, it feels like Quique Setien has battled 
through and now has some foundations from which to build 
as coach of the Yellow Submarine.


His side showed plenty of character and some genuine quality 
as well to fight back from 1-0 down to win the derby 
with Valencia last weekend. 


They perhaps benefited from being up against another team 
who would try to play positively and not just adopt 
a counter-attacking approach which often makes life tough 
for possession-based teams such as themselves.


While they are strong on the break, it’s unlikely 
that Real Madrid will just sit deep here so again we should see 
a fairly open contest and that will offer someone like Dani Parejo 
the kind of space he needs to create chances from midfield. 


The other big plus for Villarreal since the resumption is that 
Gerard Moreno is now fully fit and his presence up front makes 
an enormous difference to their overall attacking play.


While their results have still been mostly good, 
Real Madrid haven’t been playing well enough this season to
suggest they will come here and simply be too good for Villarreal.


Their two games since the restart have largely been a continuation
of that trend with two late goals sealing a win at Real Valladolid
while they weren’t at all impressive in the Copa del Rey against
minnows Cacereño in midweek with Rodrgyo’s 2nd Half strike
sealing a scarcely deserved win.


With fringe players such as Eden Hazard struggling to make 
any real impact, they don’t have many options but to go with 
their established strongest eleven in this game. 


With a number of those players just returning 
from busy World Cups, I’d be surprised if Real Madrid were 
at their best here and they may have to settle for a point.
