Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona


Not much has gone to plan for Barcelona since the World Cup 
and this is a really tough game to have for their second league 
fixture after the break. 


While Atletico Madrid have rarely convinced this season, 
we have seen a few more positive signs over the past week 
or two and the home team look capable of edging this.


Atleti have won both games since the World Cup and 
while they weren’t against the strongest of opponents, 
those victories will still breed confidence as they were struggling 
against even the weakest teams earlier in the season. 


Some players look to have come back sharper following 
a break while the emergence of youngster Pablo Barrios is also 
a major positive for Diego Simeone.


The 19 year old is a real contender to start this game 
after playing against Elche and then scoring at Real Oviedo
in the Copa del Rey in midweek. 


The presence of a homegrown young player may also help 
spur on a large Metropolitano crowd which can often be 
a difference in big games like this.


A further boost for Atleti comes 
with the suspension of Robert Lewandowski. 


Barcelona controversially managed to get his three game ban 
temporarily put on hold enabling him to play the derby 
last weekend to the fury of Espanyol. 


However a Spanish court has since rejected 
Barcelona’s appeal meaning his original three game suspension 
will now start this weekend.


Even with Lewandowski, Barca were not clinical 
in the surprise draw with Espanyol and they are unlikely 
to get as many chances in this one. 


They weren’t convincing in midweek either, 
although this time the problem was in defence as they conceded 
three times against tiny Intercity in the Copa del Rey, 
despite starting with first teamers Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo 
in central defence. 


It feels like they have a few too many players who aren’t 
at their optimum levels right now following on 
from the World Cup and in some cases injuries. 


Barcelona’s inability to get results in the big games against 
the better teams so far this season, 
particularly in the Champions League but also in El Clasico, 
is also another factor which makes you question their ability
to get a result from this fixture.
