Rayo Vallecano vs Real Sociedad


We can expect a good game here between two positive sides 
who will be targeting the win. Real Sociedad have been in terrific 
form with 8 straight victories in all competitions but Rayo Vallecano 
will give them a really good test and the hosts look capable 
of ending La Real’s winning streak.


It’s perhaps surprising that bigger clubs haven’t come in for some 
of Rayo’s better players as the likes of Isi Palazon and 
Alvaro Garcia have been really impressive again this season. 


Rayo’s two wingers have shown they can cause problems 
for even the best defences and they are aided 
by their coach’s desire to press and push their opponents back, 
particularly when they play at home.


That philosophy does sometimes create opportunities 
for their opponents to break and exploit the space left 
in behind the Rayo defence. 


However this Real Sociedad side isn’t packed full of fast players 
with more of a reliance on their considerable technical qualities.
One problem for La Real here is the suspension of Martin Zubimendi.


He is their best holding midfielder and the linking piece 
between the defence and the advanced midfield trio of 
Mikel Merino, David Silva and Brais Mendez. 


His likely replacement is Asier Illarramendi
but after considerable injury problems and at the age of 32, 
he’s not as mobile as Zubimendi and may struggle 
with the intensity of this Rayo side.


Real Sociedad are the form team in Spain right now though 
so they’ll travel to Madrid full of confidence. 


With very little World Cup involvement in their squad, 
they’ve looked fresh since the break and were worthy winners 
in the Basque derby last weekend. 


Their attacking options have also been bolstered by the return of 
long-term absentee Mikel Oyarzabal who completed 90 minutes 
in the Copa del Rey in midweek.


Take Kubo and Alexander Sorloth are currently in good 
form though and both scored against Athletic, so there is no need 
to rush Oyarzabal back into the league starting eleven. 


He could potentially have an impact off the bench though 
in what promises to be an even game 
that should feature a few goals.
