Espanyol vs Real Betis


This should be one of the most competitive games this weekend 
with Espanyol looking to build on just their third win of 
the season last time out. 


They will take confidence from the win at Getafe 
but this won’t be easy against a strong Betis side.
We saw a formation shift from Espanyol last weekend 
as they played with three centre-backs instead of the normal two. 


It appears to be a clear concession from Diego Martinez 
that his team are conceding too many goals and need 
to offer their goalkeeper a bit more protection and 
it worked quite well at the Coliseum.


While they may struggle to get much possession or control 
in midfield against a technical team like Betis, 
the system should at least allow their wing-backs to get forward 
and provide crosses for Joselu who presents a big aerial threat 
and is having an excellent first season in Espanyol colours.


Betis are the better team but they haven’t been 
at their best in recent weeks. 


The departure of pacy left-back Alex Moreno to Aston Villa leaves 
them without one of their main attacking weapons 
and they also have an injury doubt over talisman Nabil Fekir 
heading into this game.


If Fekir doesn’t make it, Sergio Canales will be their chief creative 
force here but the 31 year old isn’t having his best season 
and may struggle to complete the full game having played 
for 120 minutes on Wednesday in the Copa del Rey.


The visitors may not be at their best as a result here 
but they should still be capable of getting a point 
with Espanyol always likely to make an individual error 
at the back and Betis striker Borja Iglesias is more than capable 
of taking advantage on his return to the RCDE Stadium.
