Athletic Club vs Real Madrid


Real Madrid are back in action this weekend in LaLiga 
after a disappointing result last weekend in the Supercopa Final. 


They were well beaten in the match and while the Supercopa was 
not a big priority for Los Blancos, their apparent inferiority 
against Barça is a concern looking ahead to this title race.


This is not an easy game to have
as they look to rediscover some form. 


It’s always noisy and hostile at San Mames for the visit of 
Real Madrid but Athletic have not been impressive in recent games 
either and I’m not convinced they will be able to expose 
Real Madrid’s weaknesses as well as some teams have recently.


Athletic have struggled to offer a goal threat of late, 
scoring just once in LaLiga since the World Cup. 
That goal came in defeat in the derby last weekend 
but they created very little else in the 3-1 loss to Real Sociedad. 


Iker Muniain was once again on the substitutes bench 
which is making them a less creative side and 
without a convincing number nine, 
they may look to play on the counter attack here, 
using the pace of the Williams brothers.


The home team also has a potentially big problem 
in central defence for this game. 


Yeray is suspended and with Inigo Martinez carrying an injury 
that means he hasn’t played in over two months, Athletic will most 
likely start without their two first choice centre-backs. 


It’ll be a big ask for youngster Aitor Paredes to step in alongside 
Dani Vivian who didn’t have a good game last time out.


That weakness could tilt this match in Real Madrid’s favour 
as even though they aren’t playing particularly well, 
it may only take a big performance from someone 
like Karim Benzema for them to come out on top here.


Defensively there are concerns for Real Madrid too 
with Antonio Rudiger not having a great time in central defence 
while they’ve had issues at full-back too. 


Those are more general worries than a specific concern 
for this game though and they do have quick defenders 
which should help them deal with Athletic’s fast widemen.
