This game has been one of the highest scoring fixtures in LaLiga
in recent years with 23 goals in the last 5 meetings
at the Benito Villamarin.
While both teams have better defensive records this season
than normal, I’d still expect there to be chances in this game
and I wouldn’t be surprised if Real Betis got a result.
They can take confidence from a strong performance
against Barça in the Supercopa only a few weeks ago
with the Catalans only winning that tie on penalties
after a 2-2 draw in Saudi Arabia.
Betis were also winners at the weekend against Getafe in LaLiga
and will hope that they are now getting back towards their best
after a few poor performances.
There are no major selection worries for Manuel Pellegrini
so he should be able to unleash all of his big names and
we’ve seen in the past how Nabil Fekir often produces
his best football in the bigger matches.
Betis are one of the few teams in Spain who are close
to Barcelona in terms of their overall technical level
and they will fancy they can break down an away defence who
looked shaky at the end of their derby at Girona at the weekend.
It’s a bit of a mystery how Barcelona have only conceded 6 goals
this season in LaLiga, as they do give up chances,
but the answer in part lies in the outstanding form
of goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
The German is back to his very best right now
and should get a bit more protection in this game
with Andreas Christensen expected to rotate back
into central defence in place of Eric Garcia.
Overall, Xavi will be delighted to have completed
Robert Lewandowski’s three game suspension with three 1-0 wins
and with an extended lead at the top of LaLiga.
They were a bit fortunate to win all of those matches in truth
but will have more of a focal point for their attacks
with their main striker back here. Evenso,
I’m not convinced they will have enough to claim the win
with Real Betis always tough to play against at the Benito Villamarin.
