Real Betis vs Celta Vigo
Real Betis are the favourites here
but Celta Vigo have been much better in recent weeks
and should be able to make a good game of this.
Carlos Carvalhal’s side are defending well enough currently
to suggest they can get a result.
The home team are also at a disadvantage in that they played
in midweek, losing 2-1 against Barcelona.
Manuel Pellegrini went with his strongest eleven in that game
and he may feel as though he has to rest a few players
for this one only 72 hours later given we are at the end
of a busy period for Betis which has seen them involved
in Copa del Rey matches whilst also travelling to Saudi Arabia
for the Supercopa in January.
They did add forward Ayoze Perez on loan from Leicester late
in the transfer window but he arrives carrying an injury
and may not be fit enough to feature prominently here.
Overall, it does feel like Betis haven’t been playing quite as well as
they were earlier in the season, with their last truly convincing
league performance coming back in October
when they won away to Real Sociedad.
Celta Vigo meanwhile are going the other way and of all the teams
in LaLiga, it feels like they made best use of the World Cup break
to work on a few things on the training ground.
Defensively they have improved considerably and they kept
another clean sheet last time out in the deserved win over Athletic,
despite switching back to a back four.
It’s possible that Carvalhal may decide to return
to three centre-backs for a tough game like this and
that will make it difficult for Real Betis to find space
in the final third and create chances.
While Celta aren’t creating a lot of chances themselves and
are unlikely to get many openings here, they always have
the chance of nicking a goal with the clinical Iago Aspas up front
and he was the deciding factor last weekend again.
Overall, this could be a frustrating evening for the home team
and Celta look capable of leaving with a point.
