Real Sociedad vs Real Valladolid
Real Sociedad are having an outstanding season
and they did brilliantly to get a draw away to Real Madrid
last weekend despite the mounting issues with fatigue and injuries.
They ended that game with a host of young academy graduates
on the pitch and while they did ride their luck at times,
the draw extends their current unbeaten streak to 7 league games,
5 of which were victories.
This will be a different kind of match against struggling opponents
but having had a full week off to rest some tired legs,
I’d expect Real Sociedad to come out strong here and win the game.
That’s despite the possibility that they could be
without 11 first team squad members this weekend.
Clearly that’s a worry but the most important players in this game
may be their forwards and that’s one area of the team
where they have less selection issues.
Take Kubo and Alexander Sorloth are both fit and enjoying
perhaps the best seasons of their respective careers so far.
Meanwhile Mikel Oyarzabal is getting stronger every week
after a serious injury ruled him out for most of 2022.
He should be ready to last the full 90 minutes now
and that’s a boost as he is their most dangerous attacker.
Real Valladolid have been conceding a lot of goals
away from home and I can’t see their defence keeping
La Real’s forwards quiet here.
They did at least end a 5 game losing streak last weekend
with a vital 1-0 home win over Valencia
but this will be a much tougher match.
They were one of the most active Spanish teams
in the January transfer window.
They actually decided to let two of their main forwards leave
with Sergi Guardiola heading to Cadiz while last season’s top scorer
Shon Weissman was loaned out.
Cyle Larin has arrived on loan from Club Brugge though
and it seems like he could be their main striker now.
The Canadian made a dream start by scoring a late winner
last weekend having been introduced with 15 minutes to play.
Between him, fellow January arrival Darwin Machis and Ecuadorian
youngster Gonzalo Plata, it feels like Real Valladolid have a stronger
front three now and they should be able to improve
on their poor tally of just 14 goals in the first half of the season.
With Real Sociedad struggling with defensive and midfield injuries,
the visitors may get chances here but it’ll still be tough for them
to get a result.
