Valencia vs Athletic Club
This match is a repeat of a Copa del Rey Quarter-Final which took place
at the same stadium only a fortnight ago. Athletic were much the better
team on that occasion, winning the match 3-1 which resulted in another
outpouring of anger at Mestalla where the Valencia fans are furious
at the state of their club.
Most of that anger is directed towards the owners but they have
serious problems on the pitch too now. It’s just 1 point from 6 league
games and they’ve lost both matches so far under caretaker boss Voro.
Given the problems previous coaches have had and the club’s current
position just one place above the relegation zone, they won’t find
it easy to attract a new man to take on this job.
It’s hard to see them getting the result they need in this game either.
It’s a squad that is clearly very low on confidence but also one that
is quite young and features many loan players which isn’t ideal in
a high pressure situation like the relegation battle Valencia suddenly
find themselves in.
Their chances here aren’t helped by the suspensions of Hugo
Guillamon and Gabriel Paulista, two of their most committed players.
Athletic Club will be confident of repeating their cup win and I fancy
them to do that. It had been a poor start to 2023 in the league
with some strange selection calls from coach Ernesto Valverde,
but he found the winning formula again last time out with
a dominant 4-1 win over Cadiz.
Prior to that game, Valverde had been hesitant about picking both
Oihan Sancet and Iker Muniain in the same team but they both
started and delivered against Cadiz with Sancet scoring
a hat-trick from midfield. While it makes them a bit more open
defensively than Valverde might like, playing both players increases
their goal threat significantly and Valencia’s defence may struggle
to cope here if they can find a similar level again.
