Celta Vigo vs Atletico Madrid
Celta Vigo’s good form continued last weekend with a dramatic
4-3 win at Real Betis and they’ll be optimistic about their
chances of causing an upset here against Atletico Madrid.
The 7 goals at the Benito Villamarin came on the back of
a run that had seen Celta’s previous 6 games produce
only 7 goals in total.
It was a much more open game with Celta’s defence looking
vulnerable again, perhaps not aided by the absence of first
choice goalkeeper Augstin Marchesin who is out for the rest
of the season with a serious injury.
However going forward, there are some more positive
signs now for the Galicians. For so long they’ve been
dependent on Iago Aspas in attack but the forward didn’t
score or assist any of their four goals in Seville. Instead
youngster Gabri Veiga was the star, bagging a brace to move
onto six for the season, a fine return for a midfielder.
There was also a confidence boosting goal for Jorgen Strand
Larsen and Celta should carry enough of an attacking
threat to cause problems for Atletico Madrid here.
Diego Simeone’s side have been inconsistent since the
turn of the year with some better displays such as
their recent 3-0 demolition of Real Valladolid.
However they again struggled to create many opportunities
last time out and had to settle for a disappointing
1-1 home draw against Getafe after conceding a late penalty.
There is no great injury crisis to explain
their struggles this season.
Not enough players are delivering consistently and things
aren’t working anywhere near as well collectively as was
the case earlier on in Simeone’s long reign at this club.
It’s hard to strongly fancy them away to an improving
Celta team that has been tough to beat of late and
I’m not convinced either team will have enough to
claim the three points here.
