Villarreal vs Barcelona
This is the standout fixture in LaLiga this weekend between
two teams that love to dominate possession and control
games with the ball at their feet.
Barcelona have been considerably more successful at doing
that though, but Quique Setien will have a point to prove
up against his former club.
He also has something to prove to his own fans and board
again after two really poor results in the shape of a home
loss to Rayo and away defeat at previously winless Elche.
They were dreadful in the Second Half of that game and
Villarreal really need a response here, but it might just
suit them that this fixture is against one of the stronger sides.
We saw in their January win over Real Madrid,
not to mention throughout last season’s Champions League,
that Villarreal do have players capable of rising to
the occasion and competing against the better teams.
They appear more frustrated and often look lost when it
comes to breaking down sides who play with a more defensive
gameplan, but that certainly
won’t be the case here against the league leaders.
It has been a really significant few weeks at the top of
LaLiga with Barcelona emerging as the clear favourites
to win this league with five straight league wins so far
in 2023 while Real Madrid have faltered.
In truth, they didn’t play brilliantly in several of those
games but they were really impressive in the
Second Half of their 3-0 win over Sevilla last time out.
Xavi has stumbled upon a system that is working for him
and things are working quite well at both ends of the pitch.
They will be without midfielder Sergio Busquets due to an
injury here though. It’s most likely Frenkie de Jong will drop
into the holding role as a result but it’s not quite
a like-for-like replacement so Barcelona may struggle
to get quite as much control here.
That would have been true anyway against a Villarreal side that
usually dominates possession and the hosts should be better
defensively this week too with Pau Torres expected to be fit again.
Overall, we should see a competitive match and
I wouldn’t be surprised if it finished level.
