Atletico Madrid vs Athletic Club
This is an important game in the race for European places in LaLiga.
Athletic Club are currently 6 points behind 4th placed
Atletico Madrid and will know they really need a result here
if they are to retain serious hopes of Champions League qualification.
That may be a bit beyond the Basque side this season in truth,
but they look well placed to go on and qualify for one
of the lesser European competitions.
They’ve responded well to their first real bad patch
of the season with back-to-back league wins with excellent goals
from Nico Williams and Oihan Sancet sealing the win
at Valencia last time out.
It wouldn’t be a big surprise if we saw a slightly more cautious
approach from Ernesto Valverde this weekend and
he may consider leaving Iker Muniain out again or at least replacing
him if Athletic are level heading into the latter stages.
He won’t see a huge amount to fear in this Atletico Madrid
side though with Diego Simeone’s team still struggling to convince.
They were fortunate to win in Vigo last weekend but a first goal
for Memphis Depay in Atletico Madrid colours will be a boost
to the Dutchman’s confidence levels.
Evenso, it remains unclear quite how he fits into this Atleti side
with Simeone not trusting him to start a single game yet
in either league or cup.
Stefan Savic’s red card at Balaidos will force Atletico Madrid
into a defensive change for this game
but they should be at full strength otherwise.
That’s no guarantee that they’ll get the win though and
with only 4 wins out of 10 home league games this season,
there’s every chance Atleti will have to settle for a point
again here against strong opposition.
