Elche vs Real Betis
Real Betis have recorded back-to-back wins and while they were against
bottom half teams, it’s a positive sign for Manuel Pellegrini’s team
as they look to move on from their winter slump.
Against bottom club Elche, I expect them to win again to move to just
1 point off the Champions League places.
Elche have been more competitive under Pablo Machin and should have
taken at least a point from their home game with Espanyol last weekend.
However they still make far too many defensive mistakes and it’s hard
to see that going unpunished against a strong Real Betis attack.
The late goal they conceded to lose at home against a fellow relegation
candidate felt like the final blow to their already very slim survival hopes.
They still have 16 games to go but it’s going to be tough for these
demoralised Elche players to approach
any of those fixtures with positivity.
Their problems are compounded by injuries to the likes of top scorer
Pere Milla and Alex Collado while Sevilla loanee Jose Angel Carmona
is suspended here.
If Real Betis can get through this game without adding to their league
high tally of 10 red cards, they should have all they need
to claim another three points.
They’ve looked a bit better going forwards in recent weeks with
5 goals in their last 2 games and have Borja Iglesias back here to
compete for a start with January signing Ayoze Perez in attack.
Sergio Canales and Guido Rodriguez are notable absentees
this weekend but they should still have enough in midfield to
create the better chances in this match.
Their recent defensive issues are a bit of a concern with 9 goals
conceded in their last 4 league games, but this Elche side isn’t
carrying enough of an attacking threat to truly exploit that
so an away win looks likely.
