It’s derby day in Madrid on Saturday and it’s the second time
the clubs have met at the Santiago Bernabeu already in 2023.
Real Madrid needed Extra Time to claim a 3-1 win in the
Copa del Rey in January and these derby games are normally
close matches, but it’s hard to look past the hosts here.
Real Madrid’s confidence levels will be sky high after a brilliant
5-2 comeback win at Liverpool in the Champions League in midweek.
While their league campaign hasn’t been perfect and they are 8 points
behind Barcelona, Carlo Ancelotti’s side showed once again
why they can never be written off on the European stage.
They achieved that win with two of their most important midfielders
missing from the eleven too with Toni Kroos on the bench and
Aurélien Tchouaméni out altogether because of flu.
They are fortunate to have a versatile player like Fede Valverde who
can play on the right of a front three or in
midfield and excel in both positions.
Kroos and potentially Tchouaméni could both be ready to return here.
Real Madrid do have a tough week coming up with a cup Semi-Final
against Barcelona followed by a league trip to Betis.
However the Barça game isn’t until Thursday and given the importance
of this fixture, Ancelotti is likely to go as strong as possible which
should give them a good platform to claim the win.
Atletico Madrid gave a reasonably good account of themselves
on their recent trip to this stadium but there is a clear gulf
between the two neighbours this season.
Antoine Griezmann is the only Atleti player to truly shine and he
was the difference-maker again last weekend with a fine goal to
decide a close match against Athletic Club.
The Frenchman is capable of giving the home defence a difficult
afternoon but there is still very little consistency in terms of selection
in midfield and the defence may once again ultimately fall short
against a Real Madrid attack that has proved too quick and too
talented for Diego Simeone’s side to handle in recent derbies.
