Valencia vs Real Sociedad
Valencia suffered their 5th straight defeat last time out at Getafe and
they are in deep relegation trouble now.
It was a desperate start for newly appointed coach Ruben Baraja and
it does not get any easier with Real Sociedad and Barcelona
their next two opponents.
The way they’ve been playing, it’s hard to see them getting a result
in either of those matches.
Valencia set up in a 4-3-3 system in their first game under the
new coach and there were some slightly surprising selection calls
with Hugo Guillamon left out of the team.
They also missed the injured Edinson Cavani in attack with
Hugo Duro leading the line in his absence although the young
forward doesn’t carry the same physical presence.
To make matters worse, club captain and arguably Valencia’s
best player Jose Gaya has picked up an injury which will rule him out
for around a month and that will only add to the young and
inexperienced feel to this team.
It’s perhaps no surprise that Baraja opted to start with Gabriel Paulista
in defence last time out as the veteran Brazilian defender is one
player who does bring leadership and character.
Real Sociedad weren’t at their best in the draw with Celta Vigo in their
last game but their overall form has still been good and for once they
can approach a game here knowing it is the opposition that
has the greater injury problems.
La Real have won 14 of their 18 away games in all competitions
this season which is an outstanding record and they certainly won’t fear
a trip to Mestalla right now.
I’d expect a better showing from them this weekend given Mikel Merino
should be fit enough to start the game and that will bring
greater balance to their midfield.
The likely continued use of youngster Ander Barrenetxea in an unfamiliar
right-back position is one weakness that Valencia could potentially
look to target through the lively Samuel Lino on their left flank.
Overall though, it’s Valencia who have far greater problems and I’d
expect a confident Real Sociedad side to leave with maximum points.
