Rayo Vallecano vs Athletic Club
This is an important game in the race for European places
with just 2 points separating Rayo Vallecano
and Athletic Club heading into it.
Both sides have enjoyed strong campaigns
but recent results have been less impressive so I’m not sure
we’ll see either side at their absolute best here.
Rayo are winless in 3 games and suffered a disappointing defeat
at Cadiz last time out.
It’s far from a crisis, but boss Andoni Iraola has some thinking to do,
particularly with regards to the striker situation.
Raul de Tomas was the club’s record signing when he joined
for Є8m in September, although his arrival outside of the transfer
window meant he was ineligible to play until January,
by which time he was very short of match fitness.
That’s no longer the case but with young striker Sergio Camello
doing a good job of leading the line, Iraola doesn’t have
a natural place for his big name striker in this team.
He played both Camello and De Tomas in a front two last time out
at Cadiz without much success and they may switch back
to their usual 4-2-3-1 system here.
That may help them find a bit more rhythm but the hosts
also have an important absentee with centre-back Alejandro Catena
suspended so Athletic will be looking to take advantage
of any uncertainty in the Rayo defence.
However they’ve had problems of their own defensively of late,
surprisingly losing 3-2 at home to Girona last time out.
They are also missing one of their first choice centre-backs
to suspension with Yeray Alvarez missing but long-term absentee
Inigo Martinez was finally fit enough to play 90 minutes
in the 1-0 defeat to Osasuna in the Copa del Rey in midweek.
That’s a major boost as he is arguably their best defender,
although it’s questionable whether they will risk playing him
again four days later after such a lengthy lay-off.
We should see chances at both ends here
but the two teams have been relatively evenly-matched this season
and with neither side in great form,
this one may end without a winner.
