Athletic Club vs Barcelona
The standout fixture this weekend in LaLiga but both sides have
some issues that are preventing them from playing
their best football right now.
It’ll be interesting to see how the game pans out and much will
depend on how brave Athletic coach Ernesto Valverde is
willing to be against his former club.
His side normally plays in quite an aggressive fashion at home,
pressing high up the pitch but that may be asking for trouble
against a side as comfortable passing out from
the back as Barcelona are.
The absence of the suspended Oihan Sancet is a further limiting
factor in terms of that with the less mobile Iker Muniain likely
to play as the most advanced player in a midfield three.
Athletic haven’t really found much consistency of late and
it’s perhaps more likely that they will adopt a much more
cautious attitude with a counter-attacking game plan.
That should see Inaki Williams return to the eleven as the main
striker and in theory he is the perfect man to
exploit Barcelona’s high line.
The other positive news for Athletic is that the impressive
Ronald Araujo is suspended for Barcelona.
That will make the visitors more vulnerable at set-pieces,
often a speciality for Athletic, while it creates a dilemma for
Xavi as he must decide whether to move Jules Kounde into
central defence or bring in Eric Garcia or Marcos Alonso who
are more likely to be targeted as a potential weak link by the hosts.
Barcelona are still expected to be missing Pedri and
Ousmane Dembele which is still causing them problems
in the final third, although Robert Lewandowski may be fit
enough to play some part.
During this phase in the season, which has seen them missing
key players, the Catalans have only managed 4 goals in
their last 4 league games and I don’t see them creating a huge
amount here with no Pedri against a solid Athletic defence.
As a result, we should see a relatively even game and perhaps
quite a cautious one assuming Valverde does ask his team
to mostly play on the break.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if it finished level.
