Atletico Madrid vs Valencia
Atletico Madrid have suddenly found some form and
they are in the habit of winning games again.
Their participation in next season’s Champions League now looks
all but certain after a 9 game unbeaten run in LaLiga featuring
6 wins and 3 draws.
Unlike the teams around them, they have no cup distractions, which
has helped Diego Simeone’s team to focus on their league games.
It’d be an exaggeration to say that they are now a totally convincing
side but there have been minor improvements at both ends
of the pitch since the World Cup break and I’d expect them
to have a bit too much for Valencia here.
The visitors have adopted quite a cautious approach
since appointing their latest coach Ruben Baraja.
He has clearly decided the most important thing was to tighten
things up at the back but they’ve not been creating many chances
using these tactics and I can’t see them opening up
what is likely to be a full strength Atleti defence with the exception
of long-term absentee Reinildo.
There are still question-marks about Atletico in midfield,
but up front, Antoine Griezmann continues to excel and I’d expect
him to provide the spark that will deliver three points.
The only question really is whether Alvaro Morata,
who scored a late winner at Girona on Monday,
or Memphis Depay gets the start alongside him.
All four of Valencia’s games so far under Baraja have ended
with 1-0 scorelines, two in favour of Los Che and two against.
A repeat would be no surprise here but it’s certainly
the home team that is more likely to find the breakthrough
with the visitors lacking a clear first choice forward-line right now
with Samuel Lino surprisingly left out last weekend.
