Barcelona vs Real Madrid
The latest edition of El Clasico will all but determine
whether we even have a title race when LaLiga comes back
from the international break.
Barcelona are 9 points clear of Real Madrid heading into the match
and would all but clinch the title with a win.
However Los Blancos will know that were they to win,
they’d have a fighting chance once more whilst also inflicting
a psychological blow on their opponents.
The reality is that Barcelona are not as much clear of Real Madrid
as the league table suggests.
Indeed on a European stage, they’ve looked significantly inferior
but Xavi’s side have been impressive in their ability to grind out
results in a domestic setting and recorded their 11th 1-0 win
of the season in all competitions last time out in Bilbao.
Again, there was an element of good fortune with Athletic creating
the better chances in the game and having an equalising
goal controversially ruled out by VAR.
With Barcelona currently facing serious allegations regarding
payments to referees, that subplot is also hard to ignore heading
into this match and adds another layer to this Clasico,
a fixture which always has the potential to boil over
and it wouldn’t be a shock to see a potentially decisive sending off
at some point here.
Real Madrid may point to their rivals’ good fortune but they’ve
also got themselves to blame for failing to kill off matches
with dropped points in 4 of their last 8 league matches
a big reason why they trail Barcelona by so many points.
They’ve also been less convincing defensively,
although in truth not by as much as the respective “goals conceded”
tallies suggest with Marc-André ter Stegen frequently required
to make great saves for the Catalan side.
After a week off, Barcelona will be the fresher team
and will be the favourites heading into the match.
However whenever they’ve come up against elite opposition
this season, their solid defence has looked much more vulnerable
and I can certainly see Real Madrid scoring here with the individual
quality that the likes of Karim Benzema and Vini Junior possess.
The fitness issues that have hampered Barcelona’s recent
performances are easing though.
Pedri is in contention to start which will be a big boost in terms of
creativity and we should see a really good game with both sides
having close to their best eleven available.
Xavi has shown in recent weeks that he’s willing to be a bit
pragmatic and doesn’t always subscribe to Barcelona's attacking,
free-flowing identity.
If this one is level heading into the latter stages,
it wouldn’t be at all surprising if we saw the home team start
to play a bit more conservatively again as a draw would still
be a good result for Barcelona in the circumstances and
they’d probably settle for preserving
their 9 point advantage at the top.
