Cadiz vs Sevilla
This is a local derby in Andalusia but it’s much more than
that with the two sides currently level on points and
only just above the relegation zone.
Sevilla have changed coaches over the international break
and we’re likely to see a different approach
with Jose Luis Mendilibar replacing Jorge Sampaoli.
Despite progress into the Europa League Quarter Finals,
Sampaoli’s sacking was not a big surprise with Sevilla still in
a relegation battle as we head into the business end of the season.
Mendilibar’s introduction should see Sevilla focus
on doing the basic things better whilst most likely spending
less time on the ball.
Despite their struggles, the Andalusian club have LaLiga’s 3rd
highest average possession figures this season,
but they are likely to play slightly more direct football
under the new coach.
Mendilibar is best known for his long spell as Eibar boss,
keeping the minnows up with a distinctive style of play
that saw his team use a very high defensive line.
That does bring risks, but I believe there’s enough pace
and physicality in this Sevilla squad to adapt to his methods
and they should have enough to ultimately avoid relegation.
Whether they have enough to win this game is more doubtful though.
Cadiz are now unbeaten in 10 home league games,
which is a fantastic run for a team
that certainly has one of the weakest squads in the division.
Before the change in Sevilla coach,
they’d have fancied their chances of winning this game
but they do have a few selection issues that will hamper them.
First choice goalkeeper Jeremias Ledesma and full-back
Iza Carcelen are suspended again
while Gonzalo Escalante is a significant injury absence.
They may struggle to get much control in midfield without Escalante,
but I’d still expect them to limit Sevilla to relatively few chances
and a draw could be the outcome here.
