Villarreal vs Real Sociedad
This match sees the teams in 6th and 4th places in LaLiga meet,
but it perhaps sums up the overall level of the Spanish top flight
right now in that neither side are fully convincing.
Both were knocked out of European competitions earlier this month
and both have experienced some poor results in the league in 2023.
Villarreal have a bit more momentum heading into this match
with 10 points from their last 4 games and they look the more likely
winners in a key game in the pursuit of Champions League qualification.
They’ve lost star striker Gerard Moreno to yet another injury
but Jose Luis Morales scored two late goals in the 3-0 win
at Osasuna last time out.
The scoreline wasn’t necessarily a fair reflection of the game
but it did showcase a different side to Villarreal as they looked
a threat on the counter attack.
With Morales starting in attack and Yeremy Pino
and Samuel Chukwueze either side of him,
they do have lots of pace in their forward-line and
I could certainly see that causing problems for a Real Sociedad
side that will come here with a more positive gameplan
than many visiting teams do.
La Real did claim a much needed win last time out against Elche,
but their overall performances have not been great in recent months.
The main concern is currently the forwardline.
Alexander Sorloth hasn’t scored in 7 club appearances and
missed a great chance for Norway against Spain last weekend,
although he did get a goal in the subsequent draw against Georgia.
Mikel Oyarzabal hasn’t impressed since returning from injury
and was fortunate to get a Spain call-up.
Meanwhile Take Kubo’s form has also dipped and he may not be
in a fresh enough state to start here after returning
from a long trip to Japan.
I’d expect a relatively even game as the two teams are fairlyevenly
matched in most areas of the pitch,
but Villarreal look a bit livelier in the final third of the pitch
currently and that may prove decisive.
