prior to the international break and I’d expect them to collect
three more points here.
It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what has changed for Atleti
and their players have spoken about not doing many things differently.
Not having any cup or European distractions probably helps
as it’s enabling them to focus all their energies
into the weekend game, which favours their intensive style of play.
Defensively, we’ve seen the likes of Mario Hermoso and
Jose Maria Gimenez return to form and their current
back three is more resemblant of the 2020/21 title winning side.
Having a settled backline has contributed to them conceding
just 5 goals in 12 league games since the World Cup and
that record suggests Betis will struggle to create
many opportunities in this game.
Another factor in Atleti’s improvement may be improved
dressing room harmony.
A reported Portuguese speaking clique at Atleti was broken up
in January with Matheus Cunha, Joao Feliz and Felipe all leaving
and while it’s too simplistic to suggest
things are better now because of that,
there is certainly the impression of a more united team.
Real Betis meanwhile are having another good season
but I don’t see them having much joy in this game.
Sergio Canales has retrospectively been given a four game ban
for words to a referee earlier in the season which seems very harsh.
With Nabil Fekir out for the season through injury,
the onus will be on youngsters like Rodri and
perhaps Luiz Henrique to provide the creative spark here,
but that’s a big ask against a strong defence.
Manuel Pellegrini may adopt a slightly more cautious approach
as a result and they have been better defensively in recent matches,
although they’ve still conceded twice or more in 4 of their last 8.
Up against Antoine Griezmann, arguably LaLiga’s most
in-form player right now,
I can’t see Betis holding out for 90 minutes and
a solid home win looks likely.
