Espanyol vs Athletic Club
Espanyol sacked coach Diego Martinez earlier this week after
a fourth straight league defeat.
To some extent, the move was not a surprise with Espanyol failing
to live up to pre-season expectations but the board have taken
a big risk by appointing the relatively inexperienced
Luis Garcia as his successor.
Garcia has been coaching Real Madrid’s C team so it’s a big jump up
in quality and it’s a big task that he has on his hands.
The main challenge is to improve the defence as there are goals
in this Espanyol side and I can see them getting a result here against
Athletic who suffered a major blow in midweek, as they failed to see off
Osasuna in their Copa del Rey Semi-Final.
It leaves them needing a strong end to the league season if
they are to qualify for Europe but their tendency to miss
good chances suggests they may struggle to leave the
RCDE Stadium with anything more than a draw.
