Real Madrid’s recent history has frequently seen them start to peak
around this point in the season, just in time for another dash
for Champions League glory.
Their performances over the past week suggest we just might
be seeing a repeat again this year.
Los Blancos have fired in 10 goals with back-to-back hat-tricks
from Karim Benzema seeing off Real Valladolid 6-0 in
LaLiga and Barcelona 4-0 in the Copa del Rey.
Carlo Ancelotti has a minor dilemma now as to whether to rotate
his team here ahead of next week’s Champions League
Quarter-Final 1st Leg against Chelsea. We may see some changes
in midfield, but it’s likely the Italian will seek to continue
this momentum by naming a strong eleven.
Anything less could leave them vulnerable against an in-form
Villarreal side, but it’s perhaps more likely that we’ll just see the
likes of Aurélien Tchouaméni and perhaps Dani Ceballos rotate in,
with the dynamic duo of Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema still likely
to lead the line.
On current form, it’s hard to see this Villarreal defence, or indeed
any other, stopping the Frenchman.
He’s clearly on top of his game again and that will make life tough for
the visiting central defenders, especially with Pau Torres not enjoying
a great season while Raul Albiol may not be 100% fit following
an injury that kept him out of the important 2-0 win over
Real Sociedad last weekend.
Real Madrid should have a bit too much quality for their opponents
across the 90 minutes, but Villarreal are certainly capable of posing
a counter-attack threat here with Jose Luis Morales and
Samu Chukwueze both in good form.
On the left flank, Yeremy Pino’s energy and direct style could also
give the visitors a potential path to a goal with right-back
something of a problem position for Real Madrid with Dani Carvajal
not enjoying his best spell.
