Rayo Vallecano vs Atletico Madrid
This is a Madrid derby and a chance for both sides to further
their respective European ambitions. Earlier in the season,
you’d have fancied Rayo in this kind of fixture but
all the momentum is with Atletico Madrid now and the
visitors look capable of edging it.
It has been quite a dramatic turnaround for Atleti as
it’s only a few months ago that Diego Simeone’s long reign
appeared to be winding down to a disappointing ending.
However it’s now 6 wins from 7 in LaLiga and Atleti are
suddenly eyeing up 2nd place with Real Madrid just 5 points ahead.
That will give them something to aim for and that’s important with
little else to motivate them at this stage in the season.
Last weekend’s win over Betis all but guarantees they’ll be playing
Champions League football again but the chance to finish
above Los Blancos should ensure they keep fighting
until the final weeks of the campaign.
The team feels much more balanced now with a settled back
three while the use of Koke, a ball-playing midfielder,
in the holding role is enabling them to have more possession and
gain greater control in the middle of the park.
We’ve also seen some better performances from Rodrigo De Paul
which is helping when it comes to supplying
main dangerman Antoine Griezmann.
Rayo Vallecano are capable of giving them a tough game and
while the hosts are now winless in seven league matches,
they have drawn five of those fixtures which shows they are still
competing quite well.
We haven’t seen quite as much quality in the final third of late
from Rayo though and they are struggling to kill games off
despite taking the lead in their last two matches.
One of the problems is their lack of options off the bench.
They don’t have many great options to bring on late in games,
particularly in the key creative positions where Alvaro Garcia,
Oscar Trejo and Isi Palazon don’t have adequate replacements.
That could be a potential deciding factor here as Atletico Madrid
certainly don’t have that issue. We saw Angel Correa
come off the bench to net a brilliant winning goal last weekend
and they also have the likes of Thomas Lemar and Pablo Barrios
who can be brought on in the Second Half to inject some
energy in midfield, which could be another significant factor
against this hard-working Rayo side.
