Athletic Club vs Real Sociedad
This is the big derby in the Basque Country and both sides need
the points in the race for European places. It’s likely to be a close
game but I fancy Athletic may just edge it this time around
with home advantage in Bilbao.
Real Sociedad’s form has dipped, particularly away from home,
where they’ve struggled with the pace and energy levels
against some of their recent opponents.
Fatigue is the most viable explanation for their recent decline
and that’s a problem heading into what is always a high intensity
derby, where fitness levels and the ability to play for ninety minutes
can be just as important as technical quality.
Although they did have a long run in the Copa del Rey,
Athletic haven’t had any European distractions this season,
so they should be the fresher side overall.
They also claimed a really important win at Espanyol last weekend,
to immediately bounce back from their cup semi-final defeat,
which felt significant from a psychological point of view.
Both Williams brothers scored in that game and they are likely
to be the main dangermen here too with Real Sociedad,
although technically the superior team,
a bit vulnerable to pace and the kind of direct runners
Athletic have at their disposal.
The visitors are certainly capable of enjoying some good spells
in this match and it was a positive for them to see Take Kubo
and Mikel Oyarzabal both score in the win over Getafe last time out.
However Athletic are strong in central defence and may be able to
limit the opportunities they get here which would provide
a good platform for the home team to go on and
win this derby match.
