Valencia vs Sevilla
This game sees the season’s two big underachievers meet
with both Valencia and Sevilla in the unfamiliar territory
of a relegation battle.
Sevilla look like they will have enough to avoid
any late season drama, but right now it wouldn’t be a big surprise
if Valencia ended up suffering only their second ever relegation.
The decision to appoint Ruben Baraja appeared to have
some short-time impact with key home wins
over Real Sociedad and Osasuna.
However their overall performance levels have not improved
under his leadership and it’s just 7 points from 7 games
under Baraja following the damaging loss to relegation rivals
Almeria last weekend.
They’ve lost all their away games to date under Baraja,
but with their home supporters behind them,
we’ve seen much better from Valencia and that’s a trend
I expect to continue with some winnable home fixtures to come
at Mestalla, including this one.
Sevilla’s involvement in a difficult European tie in Manchester
on Thursday does also give Valencia a slight advantage in terms
of preparation and freshness going into this game.
The visitors are also missing three players to suspension
after they were reduced to nine men in the draw
with Celta last weekend and that includes their two recognised
left-backs with Marcos Acuna and Alex Telles both banned.
Karim Rekik may fill in, but he’s not a natural full-back
and that’s one area Valencia may look to target,
although they are themselves hampered by an injury to right
winger Justin Kluivert.
Pape Gueye’s suspension is also significant
as he has been a positive for Sevilla in midfield
in the second half of the year.
Jose Luis Mendilibar will therefore have little choice
but to name a number of players who start in the Europa League
on Thursday in his eleven and if Valencia can match the intensity
and play with the same tempo we’ve seen from them
in recent home games, they could just edge this game.
