Almeria vs Athletic Club
This promises to be a good game because both coaches are likely
to target the victory which would be a big boost to their respective
ambitions this season.
Almeria are battling for survival and their away record is so bad that
they really need to try to pick up three points, despite being up
against relatively strong opposition.
They only lost 2-1 last weekend against Atletico Madrid, but they
were vastly inferior to their opponents, scoring with their only shot
on target and creating very little else.
Returning to the Power Horse Stadium, where they have won over
half of their league games, will be a boost.
However the stronger sides have done quite well here with 7 of
Almeria’s 8 home wins coming against teams ranked below
8th placed Athletic in the table.
They always seem to create chances at home but I don’t fancy
their defence, which has the second worst record in the league,
up against Athletic’s forward-line.
The main dangerman is likely to be Iñaki Williams.
He’s a player with blistering pace and a lot of quality when running
with the ball but it’s rare that he looks as confident in front of goal
as he does currently.
He scored a brace in the Basque derby last weekend to make it
4 goals in 3 games and I’d expect him to cause big problems for
Almeria left-back Álex Centelles, while cutting inside and testing
the central defenders too.
Collectively, Athletic had been going through a difficult spell but
we’ve seen some more encouraging displays from them of late
and they’ve responded well to the disappointment of losing
a Copa del Rey Semi-Final they were expected to win.
They look hungry to push on now and clinch a European place
and they should be good enough to win here to move closer to
that objective.
