Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid
Barcelona are closing in on the league title but they have been very
unconvincing in recent matches and they may struggle to pick up
three points again here against the form team in LaLiga.
While it’s hard to be too critical of a team that is 11 points clear
at the top, Barcelona’s failure to score in three successive matches
does raise questions and has exposed some fundamental
flaws in this squad.
They have badly missed the likes of Pedri, Frenkie de Jong and
Ousmane Dembele who offer some of the attacking threat that
has been lacking.
They may get at least one or two of those players back here but
even if they can get better service to their forwards, that might
not necessarily result in more goals in this game,
certainly not against a defence as solid as Atletico Madrid’s.
The usually prolific Robert Lewandowski has failed to score in
8 of his last 9 appearances for club and country and had another
disappointing game at Getafe last week.
Meanwhile Xavi’s decision to play left-back Alejandro Balde
as part of the front three in that match would have been
a further blow to the confidence levels of Ansu Fati and
Ferran Torres who had to settle for a place on the bench.
While Barcelona were struggling to break down Getafe,
Atletico Madrid made it 6 straight wins last weekend with
another good performance against Almeria.
They are clearly the team with all the momentum and positivity
heading into this match and in former Barça forward Antoine Griezmann,
they will have a player very motivated to perform at his former
home where he never truly settled in two seasons in Catalonia.
He’s one of the few players in LaLiga capable of causing problems
for this Barcelona defence and that’s particularly true with
Andreas Christensen still missing.
However it is worth noting that Atleti haven’t won away to Barcelona
in 17 years with Diego Simeone’s conservative tendency
in these games a factor in that record.
If they’re willing to take a few risks, the visitors have a real chance in
this game but with both sides looking so solid at the back, another
low-scoring draw involving Barcelona could well be the outcome.
