Girona vs Real Madrid
Real Madrid travel to Girona this week as they look
to keep the momentum building heading
into a decisive phase in their season.
On current form, I don’t see them having too many problems
against an injury-ravaged Girona side.
Michel’s team lost two players to injury in the opening
twelve minutes of their weekend defeat at Real Valladolid
which certainly unsettled them in that game.
It means they could have as many as seven players missing here
through injury which isn’t ideal during this busy period
which sees every LaLiga side play four games in the space
of less than a fortnight.
They do at least have striker Taty Castellanos available again
but there are some big holes that need filling in defence
and midfield as a result of their selection problems.
Even at full strength, they aren’t great defensively,
but their midfield could get badly overrun by Real Madrid given
they’ll be without the likes of Yangel Herrera,
Borja Garcia and potentially Aleix Garcia.
The visitors will have Luka Modric and Toni Kroos fresh
from weekend rests and that kind of quality in the middle
of the park could prove the decisive factor in this game.
We’ve not yet seen much willingness yet from Carlo Ancelotti
to rest Vini Junior or Karim Benzema and it may not be until
next week that he seriously starts to plan for the Copa del Rey
Final and Champions League semi-final by leaving key men out.
All those things point towards Real Madrid winning this game.
They are playing some of their best football of the season
at the moment and defensively they have improved
with clean sheets in 6 of their last 7 games in all competitions.
