Rayo Vallecano vs Barcelona
Barcelona took another step towards the title by beating in-form
Atletico Madrid 1-0 at the weekend.
It was a better performance after two lackluster goalless showings
against Girona and Getafe but they’ll need to play well again
if they want to leave Vallecas with three points.
Rayo Vallecano are the sort of high intensity side that is capable
of making things difficult for a possession-focused Barcelona.
Indeed they have been a bogey team for the Catalans of late
with Andoni Iraola’s side having not conceded a single goal
in their three games against Barcelona
since winning promotion in 2021, winning two of them.
That’s a remarkable record for a small club Rayo
to have but it’s not a fluke.
They are capable of playing with a solid defensive structure
in matches like this against the stronger opponents
where they are a bit more conservative and don’t commit
as many players forward as is often the case.
However they still pick their moments to press high up
and try to force errors from the opposition and it’s a strategy
that Barcelona haven’t really found an effective way to counter.
Things are at least easing up on the injury front for Barcelona.
Both Frenkie de Jong and Pedri played some part in the weekend
win and I’d expect both to start this game.
However Sergio Busquets is suspended
and despite his advancing years,
the experienced midfielder is still somebody Barça
often struggle to replace.
De Jong will most likely drop into the holding role here as a result,
but he doesn’t possess all of the same attributes as the 34 year old.
I’d expect the league leaders to once again find Rayo
a difficult team to play against and there’s a real possibility
that they drop more points, although it’ll have no real impact
on a title race which is effectively already over.
