Barcelona vs Real Betis
Barcelona suffered yet another defeat against bogey team
Rayo Vallecano in midweek, but with Real Madrid also losing,
no harm was done to their title ambitions.
Sergio Busquets’ calming influence was missed in midfield
as they again struggled to cope with the intensity
that Rayo play with.
This will be a different kind of match against a more technical
Betis side, although there are some similarities between the two,
most notably the way both Betis and Rayo look to their full-backs
to get into really attacking positions.
Barcelona were caught out by Rayo’s impressive left-back
Fran Garcia who scored the decisive second goal
on Wednesday night in Vallecas,
but they’ve been so solid defensively this season,
it’d be unfair to read too much into one bad night.
There was at least a much needed goal for Robert Lewandowski
which should boost his confidence levels and they may find
it easier to play at their pace here and control the match
against a Betis side that doesn’t cover quite
as much ground out of possession.
Real Betis couldn’t find a breakthrough in their 0-0 draw
against Real Sociedad on Tuesday and a defeat here may all
but end their hopes of Champions League qualification.
They have more attacking quality than most teams in LaLiga
though and they certainly have enough about them
to ask questions of a Barcelona side that hasn’t played particularly
well over the past month.
However Betis rarely keep things completely tight defensively,
particularly away from home.
With the likes of Pedri and Frenkie de Jong building up towards
full fitness again following lay-offs for Barcelona,
I’d expect the home team to create enough chances in this match
to claim all the points, particularly if Lewandowski can build
on his midweek goal and start to look a bit sharper in the final third.
