Valencia vs Villarreal
This is another huge night at Mestalla as Valencia take on local rivals
Villarreal with the hosts still in the thick of the relegation fight.
Their home form has been quite good since the appointment of
Ruben Baraja, but they’ll struggle to get more than a point here
against top four contenders.
A brilliant 93rd minute winner from little known teenager Javi Guerra
gave them a vital win in the relegation six-pointer with Real Valladolid
last Thursday on this ground.
However Baraja clearly decided that his team had used up too much
energy in that match as he surprisingly rested a host of key players in
another big game against a direct relegation rival at Cadiz on Sunday.
It’s a plan that backfired as they lost 2-1 to
slip back down to 17th place.
Prioritising a tougher game like this against Villarreal was a risky
strategy to take and there’ll be plenty more criticism of Baraja’s
approach if they don’t get a result here.
Captain Jose Gaya, midfielder Andre Almeida and centre-back
Gabriel Paulista were all unused substitutes in Cadiz and should be fresh
to come into the eleven this Wednesday.
By contrast, Villarreal have taken a very different approach to
this busy period with Quique Setien continuing to pick his best players
in every match.
That’s asking a lot of the likes of Dani Parejo, Samu Chukwueze,
Yéremy Pino and Pau Torres and it’s certainly possible a bit of fatigue
may start to show in the visiting camp here.
Valencia will be hoping having fresher legs will enable them to play
with the kind of intensity that will make life really difficult for this
Villarreal side at what will be a noisy Mestalla again.
However the visitors still have more than enough individual quality to
ensure they see a lot of the ball and create chances. They should be
capable of denying Valencia what would be a priceless
three points in their battle for safety.
