Rayo Vallecano’s season can be largely summed up by
their last two matches, a 2-1 win over runaway league leaders
Barcelona, followed by a 4-0 defeat at rock bottom Elche.
Those results are not entirely down to chance though,
as Rayo’s lack of squad depth was always going to make it tough
for them to play well in their second game in four days,
although Florian Lejeune’s 27th minute red card was also clearly
a factor in their weekend capitulation.
The good news for them is they’ve had a longer break before
this Thursday night game and I’d expect them to see off
Real Valladolid who have lost their last two after a really bright
start under new boss Paulo Pezzolano.
They’ve shown much more attacking intent but their approach has
been slightly naive at times and it’s now 17 goals conceded in their
6 games since the March international break.
In the likes of Oscar Trejo and Isi Palazon, Rayo have the kinds of
creative talents who should be able to exploit those defensive flaws.
