Real Sociedad vs Girona
Real Sociedad and Girona are both having excellent seasons
and both can take another step towards European qualification
with a victory here.
It’s likely to be a competitive game with chances at each end,
but Real Sociedad may just edge it with home advantage.
They come into this game with 10 points from their last 4 games
and while they’ve put in some good performances,
they’ve also had some good fortune
with the timing of some fixtures.
Their last two matches were against Copa del Rey Finalists Osasuna
and Real Madrid who both rotated their teams and
didn’t play their best football.
Evenso, La Real still did well and deserved to win both matches
and they look almost guaranteed to qualify
for the Champions League now.
Girona’s attacking and often open style of play may suit them
in this match too as it’ll open up more space for the likes
of David Silva and Take Kubo to operate in.
We saw Real Sociedad win a 5-3 thriller when the sides met earlier
in the season but Girona have been marginally more conservative
in tougher matches in the second half of the campaign
so it’s unlikely we’ll have quite so many goals this time.
The Catalan side have won their last three matches to move
into a UEFA Conference League position.
While they’ve shown plenty of quality from the very early stages
of the season, it’s still a surprise to see them quite so high up
the league and they’ve done brilliantly to maintain their form
in recent weeks despite missing their main midfielders.
We do often see a drop-off in their performance levels away
from home though.
Their win at Sevilla in their last road game was slightly fortuitous
and only their third away victory of the season.
They should compete well here, but it’s hard to see their defence
keeping things tight for 90 minutes and a narrow home win
may be the outcome.
