Espanyol vs Barcelona


There will be no shortage of motivation here as city rivals Espanyol 
and Barcelona face off in what could be a fiery derby clash 
with the visitors looking to clinch the title whilst 
also pushing their neighbours closer to the Segunda Division.


Barcelona will be champions if they win this game and 
while they could actually win the league on Saturday night 
if Real Madrid drop points, 
I suspect those connected with the club will be hoping 
that doesn’t happen. 


They’d love to clinch the trophy on enemy territory and 
despite some underwhelming recent displays, 
I can see them doing just that.


This hasn’t been Barcelona’s most exciting title win 
with eleven 1-0 victories while they’ve only scored 
more than once in one of their last six league outings. 


However they’ve continued to be excellent defensively 
and have been able to name their best back four again in their 
last two games with Andreas Christensen back fit, 
with two more clean sheets the outcome.


Barring any late injuries, 
they should be in a position to field their strongest eleven here 
and that’s a really ominous sign for Espanyol 
who are in deep relegation trouble now after letting a 2-1 lead slip 
to lose 3-2 against Sevilla last time out. 


They do create chances and Barcelona’s back four will need 
to be solid again, but at the other end, 
it’s hard to see Espanyol holding firm for 90 minutes.


Even if the visitors aren’t at their creative best, 
Espanyol all too often make defensive errors and 
present opposing forwards with opportunities. 


We haven’t really seen much evidence of the kind of team spirit 
which is driving some of the other relegation candidates on 
and it’s looking increasingly difficult to see 
how they will avoid the drop.


12 days on from their last match and with the title most likely 
on the line, I’d expect to see a much hungrier and 
fresher Barcelona here than the one that laboured to a 1-0 win 
against 10-man Osasuna and they ought 
to be celebrating come Full-Time.
