Barcelona vs Real Sociedad
Barcelona are the champions of Spain and they put in a really
impressive display last weekend in the derby at Espanyol
to race into a 4 goal lead as they clinched the title.
They’ll be hoping this is a celebratory occasion in front of their
own fans but Real Sociedad won’t be short on motivation
as they target Champions League qualification.
Much will depend on how seriously Barcelona take the game,
but it feels like they are hungry to end the season strongly
and silence a few doubters who have still criticised them
despite what has been a dominant title win.
Much of that criticism has surrounded the lack of entertainment
and lack of goals with just 64 scored in LaLiga 2022/23,
compared to 90 or more in each of their previous
eight league title wins.
Those all came during the Leo Messi era and such figures explain
why there is still a clamour to bring him back this summer
despite the difficulties Barcelona will have financing such a move.
We did see a much more fluent and creative performance from
Xavi’s team last weekend though and we can expect more of
that with Pedri getting back to full match fitness,
as he’s the one player who really elevates them to
another level in midfield.
I’d expect Barcelona to name something very close to their
strongest eleven again here, despite having nothing much to play for.
That will make it tough for Real Sociedad who have an awful
record on this ground, collecting just one league point at
Camp Nou since a victory way back in 1991.
While Real Sociedad have been picking up some good home
results and are best placed to clinch 4th place, we’ve not
seen many really convincing away performances
from them in 2023.
They’ve only won 2 of their last 10 away games in all
competitions and in truth there is quite a big difference
between their level and those of the
top three sides in this league.
Providing Barcelona maintain their focus and show the same
level of consistency we’ve seen from them virtually
all season, they should win this game.
