Sevilla vs Real Betis
It’s derby day in Seville on Sunday as European hopefuls Sevilla
and Real Betis renew their bitter rivalry.
Betis were much the more impressive of the two Seville clubs
in the early part of the season but that gap has narrowed
considerably as the campaign has gone on and
it’s unquestionably Sevilla who take more momentum into this game.
The only thing that’s not ideal for them, is the fact they have
a Europa League Semi-Final 2nd Leg against Juventus just three days
before what is always a high intensity derby.
They are playing with such belief right now though, that the heavy
workload is seemingly having little effect on them and they scored
three Second Half goals to win at Real Valladolid last weekend
despite rotating heavily after an impressive performance in Italy.
The importance of this derby game means José Luis Mendilibar
is very unlikely to make so many changes here with
key men more likely to be rested for the trip to bottom
club Elche next week.
They may still need to make good use of their subs bench in
order to see the game out but I’d expect at least a strong
hour from Sevilla and the way they are playing,
they are capable of taking control of this match during that period.
It’s a more direct, more physical approach from Sevilla than
we saw under Jorge Sampaoli and they are getting the ball
to in-form striker Youssef En Nesyri much quicker than previously
which really plays to his strengths.
By comparison, Betis are much more suited to playing at
a slightly slower tempo and they may struggle
if Sevilla can maintain their recent energy levels here.
You also have to worry about Betis’ discipline in an often
bad-tempered derby clash like this.
They’ve had problems with that all season with a league
high 13 red cards.
Two of those came in the reverse fixture against Sevilla
and while they still managed to get away with a draw
on that occasion, they almost certainly won’t be able to
get by with less than 11 players this time with their city
rivals playing much better football now than
they were back in November.
