It’s five defeats in a row for Real Valladolid who head
into matchday 36 in the relegation zone and in need of an upset
against LaLiga champions Barcelona.
Their current struggles, particularly in defence,
suggest they will struggle to get a result though.
Despite the bad form, they had been producing
some competitive performances which would have given recently
appointed Paulo Pezzolano cause for optimism,
but there were few positives on Friday night in
what was their biggest game of their season so far.
While it took a brilliant solo goal from Cadiz’s Theo Bongonda
to break the deadlock, it was a poor display from Real Valladolid
with little sign of the greater creativity that had been evident
in previous games, as they sank to a damaging 2-0 defeat.
With the second worst defensive record in the division,
they’re not the kind of side that can simply hope to sit deep here
and hold Barcelona off for 90 minutes.
The visitors will get space and their ability to fully capitalise on it,
may depend on the availability of the influential Pedri
whose late injury was a factor in their weekend defeat
against Real Sociedad.
Perhaps a bigger factor was centre-back Ronald Araujo
also missing that game with a minor injury as it was one
of Barcelona’s least convincing defensive displays
of the whole season.

between Barcelona’s regular starters and
fringe players was quite evident, although it’s an issue less likely
to be exposed here given the relative weakness of the opposition.
The Barça boss seems unwilling to give a lot of minutes
to his back-up and young players in any case,
so we aren’t likely to see an enormous amount of rotation
from the away team.
With Real Valladolid lacking cohesion and leaking goals,
the champions ought to be capable of winning this match,
particularly if they can get Pedri and Araujo fit in time to feature.
