Espanyol vs Atletico Madrid
Espanyol gave themselves a glimmer of hope in their battle
for safety with a slightly fortuitous win at Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.
They most likely need to win two of their final three games
to stand a chance of survival.
Their weekend win was largely thanks to a fine display
from Sergi Darder who scored the first goal and set up the second,
with another fierce shot that crashed off the post
and rebounded to present an easy finish for Nico Melamed.
Darder is the one player who really gives them quality
on the ball and it’s vital that he sees plenty of it here.
That win will really lift the Espanyol fans and give them a bit of
belief which should in turn result in a much more positive atmosphere
for what is another vital game.
They’ll need their players to respond though and at least stay
in the match for longer than they did
in the recent derby with Barcelona.
If they can do that, this could turn into a difficult night
for Atletico Madrid if they fall short of their usual levels.
For the first time,
we did see some complacency creep in during their last away game,
a shock defeat at bottom club Elche.
While they responded well with a strong performance
against Osasuna, it may be difficult for Atleti’s players to maintain
those intensity levels with the end of the season so close now
and little left to play for.
They are now mathematically guaranteed Champions League football
after the weekend results.
The battle for 2nd with Real Madrid will provide a small amount
of motivation but it doesn’t compare to the desperate need
for points that Espanyol currently have and
the visitors aren’t helped by seven players,
including a number of regular starters, carrying injuries.
That will limit their options in terms of bringing in fresh legs,
particularly in defence, and I’d expect Espanyol to create
enough chances in the game to get a result,
although it may not be the win they so badly need.
