Atletico Madrid vs Real Sociedad
It’s 3rd against 4th at the Civitas Metropolitano this weekend
and it promises to be a competitive game between two teams
who have largely played well in recent weeks, although
a few cracks have started to show for Atlet.
As much as anything,
we’ve perhaps just seen their concentration levels drop
and a bit of complacency creep in with the end of season near
and nothing much to play for besides a scrap for 2nd
with local rivals Real Madrid.
It’s hard to imagine that at any other time in the season,
they’d have allowed a 3-0 advantage to slip away like they did
in midweek at Espanyol, in a game that ended level.
They also recently lost at bottom club Elche but at home
their form has been excellent with 8 straight victories in LaLiga
in front of their own fans.
They’ve had a good run of fixtures but this will be
their toughest home game since Barcelona won here
in early January.
Real Sociedad are playing well and they didn’t really have
to exert much energy to win again in midweek given opponents
Almeria were reduced to ten men in just the 36th minute.
It was the perfect scenario in many respects for Imanol’s team
who had 73% possession and were able to comfortably see
the game out for a 1-0 win courtesy of Take Kubo’s fine strike.
They should cause some problems for an Atleti backline
that hasn’t been faultless of late with back-up keeper Ivo Grbic
perhaps not instilling quite as much confidence in this defence
as first choice Jan Oblak who is an injury doubt once more.
Defensive injuries have also led to Axel Witsel having
to once again fill in as a centre-back.
The visitors have an opportunity to get the win they need
to clinch Champions League qualification but the presence
of the ever impressive Antoine Griezmann,
who was a La Real player the last time the Basque side played
UCL football a decade ago,
may just be enough to ensure Atleti get a result.
