Valencia vs Espanyol


This is a meeting between the two biggest clubs involved
in the relegation battle. Both have had disappointing seasons
and while Valencia are only five points better off than Espanyol,
they are in a much stronger position to go on and secure safety.


Valencia upset Real Madrid last weekend in a game
that was overshadowed by racist abuse directed at visiting
forward Vini Junior. They have been punished with a small fine
and a partial stadium ban, although are planning to appeal.


They missed a chance to secure survival on Thursday night,
going down 1-0 at Mallorca, despite creating much
the better opportunities in that match.


Their current performance levels are high enough to suggest
they should get some points from their final two games
to beat the drop, but it's possible a bit of nervous energy
will return for this high pressure match with their momentum
thwarted by that midweek defeat.


Espanyol still struggle to convince defensively but we’ve at least
seen a bit more evidence of team spirit and a desire
to stay alive over the past week as they claimed a hard fought win
at Rayo Vallecano before coming from 3-0 down to draw
a remarkable game against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.


They’ll take confidence from that and I’d expect them to just try
to play positively here and take a few risks as it’s too late
for them to really rectify those problems at the back,
while they most likely need to win to stand any chance of survival
on the final weekend.


Much will depend on which team handles the pressure best
but we should see opportunities at each end and
Espanyol have scored in 21 of their 22 matches
since the World Cup which is testament to their continued goal threat.


Valencia haven’t been scoring freely under Ruben Baraja 
but they have competed well in recent weeks, particularly at home, 
and I’d expect them to take at least a draw here 
which may be enough to secure safety, 
depending on other results.
