Osasuna vs Girona
Five teams go into the final weekend in LaLiga 2022/23 with
a chance of finishing 7th but this is the key game and the
UEFA Conference League qualifier will most likely be one of these two.
That would be a really big achievement for either club but
I fancy Osasuna may just have the edge.
It has the feel of a knockout game, a format that has suited Osasuna
well this season with their successful run to the Copa del Rey Final and
home advantage could also help them at what will be a sold out El Sadar.
They’ve been solid at home of late, winning four of their last five
in LaLiga in front of their own fans and the only exception was
a game against Real Sociedad where
they were rotating players ahead of the big cup final.
There will be none of that here with Jagoba Arrasate in a position
to pick what he perceives to be his strongest eleven with
few injury issues.
If there is a criticism of Arrasate, it is perhaps that he rotates
too much and the constant changes in goal haven’t been ideal.
A big mistake from Sergio Herrera cost them a point at Getafe
last weekend but Aitor Fernandez, who has been the more
impressive keeper this season, should return for this game.
He’s likely to be tested by a Girona side that always asks
questions of opposing teams but the Catalans are winless
in four games.
Their performance levels haven’t dropped significantly but
we’ve perhaps seen a bit of evidence of their inexperience
at times and their failure to hold onto a 1-0 lead against
Betis last weekend may end up costing them a European place.
Their midfield injury issues have improved but it may still be
a little bit difficult for someone like Aleix Garcia,
who hasn’t completed ninety minutes since February,
to step in and compete in what is sure to be an intense match.
They’ve had a terrific season as a newly promoted club, but
they may fall just short here against an Osasuna side that boasts
more experience and will be backed by a passionate crowd
in a match that is effectively a play-off for a place in Europe.
