Celta Vigo vs Barcelona
After Real Valladolid, Celta Vigo are the side in the biggest danger
going into matchday 38.
They need to beat champions Barcelona to absolutely guarantee safety,
although there are some scenarios where
they could lose and still stay up.
It’s going to be a nervous evening at Balaidos and of the six teams
still involved in the relegation scrap, they have been by far
the least convincing in recent weeks.
European challengers only two months ago,
they’ve now lost 7 of their last 9 league games.
Under normal circumstances, it would be very hard to see them getting
a result here but it’s unlikely that we’ll see the best version of Barcelona
who have nothing to play for.
Club legends Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets will play no part
in the game having waved goodbye to Camp Nou last weekend.
They are also missing three regular starters to injury with Pedri,
Ronald Araujo and Alejandro Balde all sidelined.
Xavi will therefore have to give some minutes to fringe players and
we have seen strong evidence in recent weeks that Barcelona’s level
dips significantly when that is the case with recent away defeats at
Rayo Vallecano and Real Valladolid.
That gives Celta hope but they haven’t looked convincing enough
going forwards to suggest they will fully take advantage.
Talisman Iago Aspas is playing through the pain barrier with a back
injury but doesn’t look anywhere near his best.
None of his three potential strike partners have been particularly
effective in front of goal while young star Gabri Veiga’s form
has also massively declined.
Those players will also have to try to find a way past Barcelona
goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen, who is likely to be the most
motivated visiting player, as he needs just one more clean sheet to
set a new LaLiga record.
A low scoring game looks likely as a result and Celta will
struggle to get more than a point.
