FC Bayern 


An 11th consecutive league title helped paper over the cracks, 
but all in all, it was one of the most disastrous and embarrassing 
seasons in Der Rekordmeister’s modern history. 


Over the past 12 months the ‘most expensive manager in 
football history’ was let go, CEO Oliver Kahn and Sporting Director 
Hasan Salihamidžić were also dismissed a minute after 
the Bundesliga was won, and statement signing Sadio Mané both 
joined the club and left it again without making any positive impact 
during a chaotic year everyone would rather forget. 


A colossal internal rebuild is on the cards, but this summer window 
will likely only be the start of a process that should take 12-24 months 
to reach completion. 


Without a marquee number nine, and a dominant defensive midfielder, 
Bayern enter the new campaign far from full strength. 


However, when Harry Kane - or another center forward of a top caliber
 - does inevitably arrive, Der Rekordmeister should have enough in 
the tank to finish top of the pile for a 12th-year running.

Entering the final day of fixtures with a 2-point buffer at the 
top of the table, Borussia Dortmund only needed to match FC Bayern’s 
result last May to ensure that the Meisterschale would be leaving 
Munich for the first time since 2012. 


BVB’s ultimate failure has left scars that still haven’t healed to this day, 
but that alone isn’t the only negativity that Die Schwarz-Gelben 
face heading into the new campaign. 


Star midfielder Jude Bellingham was allowed to complete a €103m 
move to Real Madrid in July. 


It’s a colossal fee that Dortmund simply had to accept. 


Still, Bellingham’s big-game accountability, box-to-box impact, 
and midfield aura are impossible to replace even with the smart 
addition of former RB Leipzig, FC Bayern, and Manchester United 
midfielder Marcel Sabitzer. 


Dortmund will no doubt remain a competitive threat next season, 
but it’s hard not to look back on the previous campaign 
as the optimal opportunity for Die Schwarz-Gelben to finally break 
Bayern’s supremacy in the German topflight.

Despite losing their top scorer over the summer 
(Moussa Diaby - Aston Villa), Bayer Leverkusen enter the new campaign 
with one of the most complete and well-recruited rosters 
in the Bundesliga. 


Die Werkself have done an exceptional job of adding notable continental 
experience to a side already brimming with exciting, talented, prospects. 


Jonas Hofmann (31 yrs), Granit Xhaka (30 yrs), and 
Alejandro Grimaldo (27 yrs) are all notable international stars who 
could enter the peak of their career at the Bay Arena. 


Finally, Union Saint-Gilloise striker Victor Boniface (22 yrs) comes 
in to cover the most notable problem position 
in Xabi Alonso’s setup. 


The previously dominant Patrik Schick missed over 30 matches last year 
due to various abductor problems, and even when he managed to 
make it on the pitch, the Czech international lacked the confidence and 
fitness to set the league alight. 


With smart recruits that align optimally with Alonso’s dynamic attacking 
match plan, this squad could be well placed to finally end an over 
30-year wait for a title. 


They won’t be favorites in the Bundesliga by any stretch of the 
imagination, but if you are looking for a dark horse, Leverkusen 
may just be your best bet!

Dominik Szoboszlai have all sought new challenges 
in the English Premier League, while experienced midfielder 
Konrad Laimer has finally completed 
his much-anticipated move to FC Bayern. 


In their place comes a range of youngsters with huge development 
potential, but whether it can all quickly gel together 
on the pitch remains to be seen. 


Following Marco Rose’s appointment in September, and 
the subsequent surge up the table, only 4 points separated Leipzig 
from winning the Bundesliga last season, 
but with a largely new cast of players entering this campaign, 
simply qualifying for the Champions League should be the main priority.

VfL Wolfsburg are a side who quietly went under the radar in the

A mere point was missing for European qualification; a solid

Former FC Bayern, Eintracht Frankfurt, and AS Monaco manager 
Niko Kovač arrived on the sidelines, while 6 players with an average 
age of 21 were signed to significantly alter the squad dynamics. 


In typical Kovač fashion, Wolfsburg displayed solid defensive form 
while lacking a cutting edge in the final third to truly sustain 
a threat at the top of the table. 


No player scored more than 6 goals last season, a reoccurring problem 
at the Volkswagen Arena since Die Wölfen lost 
Wout Weghorst in January 2021. 


Should Wolfsburg collectively come up with 10-15 more goals 
next season, then they can definitely pose a competitive 
Champions League threat.

qualified for the UEFA Champions League group stage via a 
4th place league finish. 


The robust defensive blueprint, and manager Urs Fischer’s persistence 
with senior talent, are not always easy on the eye, but it has proven 
a winning formula to exceed expectations year after year in the 
German topflight. 


Beware of predicting a severe drop-off next season, Union are here to 
stay at the top of the Bundesliga!

Eintracht Frankfurt


Eintracht Frankfurt’s season was really defined by two halves. 


Up until the World Cup break Die Adler were fantastic. 


As late as matchday 16 they were second in the Bundesliga, and in 
the club’s debut Champions League campaign, they successfully 
mastered the groupstage. 


However, in the final months of the season, it all came tumbling down.


Frankfurt were slain over two legs against a far superior S.S.C Napoli, 
and between matchday 22 and 31, Die Adler didn’t manage to 
win a single Bundesliga game. 


Scraping the UEFA Conference League, and making it to the DFB 
Pokal final helped save some face, but overall it was a season that 
promised so much more. 


Looking ahead, Frankfurt are another side facing a rebuild 
for the new season. 


Former Julian Nagelsmann assistant Dino Toppmöller replaces 
Oliver Glasner in the dugout, while a critical defensive factor in 
Evan Ndicka, a midfield engine in Djibril Sow, and an essential 
attacking star in Daichi Kamada, have all left the club for 
opportunities abroad. 


How Frankfurt will fare will largely depend upon Toppmöller’s ability to 
quickly imprint his identity on the squad, and keep star forward 
Randal Kolo Muani at the pristine level he showed 
throughout all of last season.

more success in recent years, and Freiburg now looks ready to firmly 
establish themselves as a consistent

in order to bolster, rather than replace, a squad that has maintained 
its most important components from last season. 


Unlike the previous two summer windows where Stuttgart had 
to contend with significant departures to cover the club’s financial 
pitfalls, it looks like Die Schwaben are finally acting on 
the front foot ahead of the new campaign. 


The signing of FC Bayern goalkeeper Alexander Nübel will hopefully

Just about everything that could go wrong did go wrong for 
TSG Hoffenheim last season. 


Die Breisgauer went on a historic 14-game winless streak between 
October and March, lost key summer signing Grischa Prömel to a 
5-month injury layoff, and spent almost 
the entire campaign dragging themselves through a relegation battle.


With their ultimate finish of 13th being the worst result since 2016, 
Hoffenheim will be hoping for a lot to change heading 
into the new campaign. 


Manager Pellegrino Matarazzo now has a full pre-season with the squad 
under his belt, and Hoffenheim have made some impressive signings 
who are all capable of immediately 
competing for places in the starting eleven. 


If the American manager can balance Die Kraichgauer’s expansive 
attacking style with a result-focused defensive solidity, 
then Hoffenheim have a squad capable of upsetting 
more than a few predictions this season.

There is probably no Bundesliga club that has experienced more
turnover over the summer than Borussia M’gladbach. 


The top 4 goalscorers from last season have all departed for 
new challenges, taking 39 of the club’s 55 goals in the 22/23 Bundesliga 
with them. It’s a star-studded list that includes German international 
Jonas Hoffmann, World Cup finalist Marcus Thuram, 
BVB-bound Ramy Bensebaïni, and club captain Lars Stindl. 


Add to that a managerial change as former Bayer Leverkusen 
boss Gerardo Seoane returns to the league to replace Daniel Farke, 
and it is almost impossible to judge where this Gladbach squad stands.
 

There are some exciting new faces, and Seoane is a manager renowned 
for expansive attacking football, but whether all these parts can come 
together so quickly remains to be seen. 


Gladbach fans should well and truly brace themselves for a turbulent 
year - this could really go in any direction!

Since entering the Bundesliga for the first time in 2010, 
FC Augsburg have almost unanimously been regarded as one of the 
least charming clubs for a neutral spectator to be drawn to. 


Die Függerstädter do not have an impressive fanbase, often play 
some of the most laborious football in the top flight, and have 
historically failed to produce young talent over an extended period. 


However, these unglamorous aspects are beginning to change 
following the new ownership campaign headed by 
American investor David S. Blitzer. 


FC Augsburg enter the new campaign with the youngest squad 
in the club’s topflight history, and despite some notable struggles 
last season, Die Függerstädter have held true to 39-year-old 
Enrico Maaßen in the dugout. 


It is perhaps too early to begin dreaming of a top-half finish given 
that Augsburg have finished between 12th and 15th in all of the 
last 7 Bundesliga seasons, but Die Függerstädter should have enough 
quality to retain their status for another year and continue 
the process of building a more exciting future at the WWK Arena.

Having lost their club captain - Jonas Hector -, star midfielder 
- Ellyes Skhiri -, and local icon - Timo Horn - for free over 
the summer, FC Köln are facing one of the most daunting 
rebuilds of any topflight outfit. 


Fortunately, the speculated transfer ban will not come into effect and 
Köln have been able to seek external replacements. Leart Paqarada 
- formerly of St. Pauli - and Jacob Christensen 
- formerly of FC Nordsjaelland - are two of the most valuable recruits, 
but what remains in the Dom-Stadt is where Köln will 
derive their confidence from. 


Manager Steffen Baumgart extended his contract until 2025 in May, 
an important symbol of devotion from Köln’s most important man. 


Since arriving from Paderborn in 2021, Baumgart has transformed 
the club’s identity with a combative and committed approach. 


Though his sideline antics may look elaborate to some, the fiery spirit 
has proven to get the most out of a squad that is fairly 
limited by Bundesliga standards. 


There is no doubt that the intense personnel turnover will have a 
negative effect on the club next season, but with Baumgart 
at the helm, they have a strong basis to make it over 
the line come Matchday 34.

Die Werderaner to stave off any relegation fears.

takes for another prolonged topflight spell.

Though defeat on the final matchday saw Darmstadt surrender 
the 2. Bundesliga title to FC Heidenheim, there is no debate that 
Die Lilien were the most consistent outfit in the

From matchday 10 onwards Darmstadt never dropped out of a direct 
promotion spot, and between mid-July and the beginning of March, 
Torsten Lieberknecht’s side went on a historic 21-game unbeaten streak. 


Nevertheless, regardless of how impressive they were last season, 
there is nobody at the club who hasn’t registered just how difficult 
the task of remaining in the Bundesliga will be. 


Selling last season’s top scorer Phillip Tietz in the summer window was 
self-destructive behavior from Die Lilien, and there is now an extreme 
onus on Lieberknecht’s strong defensive blueprint to carry 
an underwhelming attack throughout the coming campaign.

1. FC Heidenheim


One would be forgiven for never having heard of 
FC Heidenheim ahead of this season. 


Hailing from a mid-sized village with a population of less than 50,000, 
the club’s rise to the pinnacle of German football is truly unimaginable. 


Less than 15 years ago the South-German outfit had never played 
higher than the regional 4th tier, 
and in a week’s time, they travel to Wolfsburg for a Bundesliga fixture.


A lot has changed to turn a small village club into one of the 
top 18 sides in the country, but there is one thing that has remained 
constant throughout the entire meteoric rise. 


The manager, Frank Schmidt, has been in the hot seat for over 
15 years at Heidenheim. 


To no surprise, it is a feat unmatched by any other head coach in 
one of Europe’s top 5 leagues. 


Schmidt’s impressive ability to develop talent and get the best out of 
a limited budget makes him very similar to

6 gamesof last season, Bochum’s chances of remaining 
in the Bundesliga were practically 0% by September. 


Yet, a managerial change, a fiery home atmosphere, and an updating 
of the robust and combative playstyle were ultimately enough for 
Bochum to somehow scrape survival on the final matchday. 


Bringing the same commitment and fighting spirit to the 
new campaign will be an absolute must for even the 
hope of retaining top-flight status for another year. 


But, even if their effort is faultless, it will still be an uphill battle. 


After conceding a staggering 72 goals last season, Bochum have 
failed to adequately address their defensive problems, and in attack, 
there is not the level of output to make up 
for this adherent backbone.
