PSG

After beating Lens to the Ligue 1 title last season by just a point,

it has been a tumultuous summer at the Parc des Princes.

Les Parisiens struggled to hone

in on Christophe Galtier’s replacement, but in Luis Enrique,

they have landed on arguably the outstanding candidate.

The Spaniard will propose a more sophisticated,

forward-thinking style of football,

likely to please fans and also play to the strengths

of the squad’s talented attack.

However, will this strikeforce still include Kylian Mbappé

by the end of the transfer window?

The transfer saga has polluted the club’s pre-season preparations.

Regardless of the France captain’s future,

there is enough talent within this PSG squad to win the league,

and in Luis Enrique, they are in a safe pair of hands

to win a third-consecutive Ligue 1 title.

Like many clubs around them,

Marseille have made a managerial change in the off-season.

Exhausted by his passage at the Vélodrome,

Igor Tudor left half-way through his contract,

and was replaced by Marcelino.

The former Athletic Bilbao manager is an interesting appointment,

and his clear philosophy should provide a strong basis

for Marseille to thrive.

However, like all Marseille managers,

the Spaniard will be under significant pressure from the offset.

His appointment, coupled with an impressive window,

which has added experience and a sprinkling of excitement

and tenacity to an already impressive squad,

should allow them to once again secure Champions League football.

The question is, can they rival PSG for the title?

The flare seeped out of Rennes’ football last season.

Bruno Genesio arguably possesses the most plentiful attacking

arsenal in the division, but it wasn’t always put

to good use last season.

The absence of Martin Terrier is a huge mitigating factor,

and his return could, and should, spur the club on.

The arrivals of Ludovic Blas and Enzo Le Féé are two

of the best bits of business of the window.

Both are experienced Ligue 1 players at this point,

despite their youthfulness.

Whilst we can expect plenty of goals from Rennes,

whether they meet their objectives, or fall short,

could depend on their defence.

This was a weak point for Rennes last season,

and the departure of experienced club captain Hamari Traoré

at right-back will do little to help matters.

Further intelligent recruitment could take Rennes

from competing for the Europa Conference League,

towards competing for the Champions League.

MONACO

Monaco have undergone something of a reboot this summer.

The Principality club’s collapse at the end of the last campaign,

which saw them miss out on all forms of European football

for this season, put paid to Philippe Clement’s time at the club.

Sporting Director Paul Mitchell has also left, as was planned,

and been replaced by Thiago Scuro.

Like Mitchell, the Brazilian has a background

within the Red Bull family, which constitutes an element

of continuity in a project that is taking a new dimension.

Adi Hütter has replaced Clement.

The new-established Hütter-Scuro duo will be hoping

to lead Monaco back to Europe,

however, it will be a tough task.

The summer transfer business has thus far been meagre,

although through the sale of Axel Disasi,

more arrivals are expected - and they are needed.

The lack of European football this season will alleviate pressure

on Monaco’s calendar,

and the Principality club should therefore be back

in the mix for the Champions League places this season,

although they are admittedly one of Ligue 1’s more unknown quantities.

Paulo Fonseca’s side really hit their stride towards the end of the season.

The Portuguese manager’s style was at times booed

by the Lille faithful last season,

but it is fair to say that they were won over

by the end of the campaign.

The foundations of a push for a Champions League spot were laid,

but they are yet to be built upon this summer,

much to the frustration of Fonseca.

Given that Les Dogues will be competing

in the UEFA Europa Conference League this season,

the required quality, and depth,

has yet to be added to a squad

that already needed strengthening.

Noises of Jonathan David remaining at the club will be a boost,

however, given that Lille were resigned

to losing their prolific Canadian international.

Lens were the surprise package last season, and a welcome one.

Their slick functioning and intelligent recruitment has led them

to the Champions League this season.

Repeating the feat would always have been a difficult task,

but that task has been made significantly more difficult.

Le Sang et Or have been plundered this summer.

Major architects of that success: Seko Fofana and

Loïs Openda have departed. Their spine has been dismantled,

but Lens’ ability for renewal is impressive.

Their business has been shrewd, not bombastic,

whilst Kevin Danso has committed his future to the club

by signing a contract renewal.

His importance to the club cannot be understated.

However, with a hectic calendar,

Lens would be expected to slip back this season

- how significantly remains to be seen.

Nice are another one of Ligue 1’s unknown quantities.

Last season was a write-off.

The summer chaos derailed Les Aiglons,

and they never really recovered.

Many of those recruits have now departed,

and their absence gives room for Nice to grow.

In Francesco Farioli, Nice have taken a chance.

A former member of Roberto De Zerbi’s backroom staff

at Sassuolo, the 34-year-old Italian is untested at this level,

although it will be hoped that he can mirror the success

of his compatriot, who has flourished in the Premier League.

An improvement on last season can be expected,

but with other teams also strengthening, a large leap up

the table will prove difficult.

It hasn’t been smooth sailing for John Textor since his purchase

of Les Gones last season.

After an awful start under Peter Bosz,

Lyon began to pick up momentum towards

the end of the season under Laurent Blanc.

Alexandre Lacazette,

as well as academy graduates such as Rayan Cherki

and Bradley Barcola were largely to thank for that.

However, sanctioned by the DNCG,

French football’s financial watchdog,

Lyon have been restricted in the summer window.

Once again therefore,

the club will be reliant on their graduates this season…

if they can keep hold of them.

The Alsace club was taken over by Chelsea’s owners,

BlueCo, at the beginning of the summer.

The Americans’ arrival has had a considerable bearing

on Strasbourg’s transfer window.

With increased means,

the club have made some big-money moves

that should bring tangible and considerable improvements.

A repeat of last season’s relegation battle seems, on paper,

an impossibility. Patrick Vieira will, however, have something to prove.

The new Strasbourg manager lost his job at Crystal Palace

last year and underwhelmed

during his last spell in Ligue 1 with OGC Nice.

and whilst Amine Salama and Oumar Diakité are promising

young forwards, they aren’t yet prolific.

It will therefore be difficult for them to challenge the top-half.

However, in Still, Reims have a young and

innovative manager on an upward trajectory.

Mid-table mediocrity likely awaits the Champagne side.

Not all is well at Lorient. Ultimately, Régis Le Bris didn’t join Nice,

but tension reportedly remains

between the rookie French manager and the club’s hierarchy.

Les Merlus were the surprise package in the first part

of the season, exceeding all expectations.

Ultimately, the club finished mid-table,

but that result still exceeded expectations.

The pillars of that successful side have departed;

now it remains to see if the house collapses.
