ALAVES
Alaves were promoted via the Segunda Division play-offs
thanks to a very late penalty in Extra Time,
but they will most likely struggle on their return to the top flight.
They only scored 47 goals last season in the second tier
with their main striker Miguel de la Fuente managing only 4.
Their only forward addition so far is Giuliano Simeone,
son of Atletico Madrid coach Diego,
but he’s young and unproven at this level.
Defensively they’re reasonably solid with a relatively cautious coach
but I don’t see them having enough in attack to avoid relegation.

Almeria narrowly avoided relegation on the final weekend
last season and their coach Rubi left soon after the last game.
They now have former Espanyol boss Vicente Moreno
in charge and that feels like a solid appointment.
They’ve sold star striker El Bilal Toure,
but a huge €28m fee means they’ve funds to add several
new players and that process has already started
with Luis Suarez converting his loan into a permanent deal
while Edgar Gonzalez is a good signing from Real Betis.
There should be money left over to add a couple of defenders
and perhaps a goalkeeper before the transfer window shuts.
Overall, Almeria should end up stronger
than they were last season as long as they recruit well.

Athletic Club narrowly missed out on European qualification
on the final weekend last season and a top six or
seven finish will be the target again this year.
Their squad hasn’t changed a great deal
with centre-back Iñigo Martinez, who has joined Barcelona,
the only significant departure.
Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta is a good addition from Mallorca
in midfield though.
It felt like Ernesto Valverde missed a trick by relegating
Iker Muniain to a fringe role last season,
but if he can find a way to incorporate the midfielder
into the team, Athletic should be capable of slightly
more this season, although the lack of a convincing goalscorer
will most likely remain their main weakness.

Atletico Madrid got better as last season progressed
but paid the price for a really poor start.
We should see more from them this term
with a more consistent structure now in place
while key man Antoine Griezmann has fully settled back into life
at Atletico Madrid after a difficult few years.
The Frenchman is arguably the best player in the league and
could spearhead what may be a genuine title challenge from Atleti.
They look stronger defensively having added Javi Galan,
Cesar Azpilicueta and Caglar Soyuncu this summer
and ought to run Barcelona and Real Madrid close.

BARCELONA
Barcelona are the defending champions but it’s likely to be
a more challenging season for a number of reasons.
Firstly, they will be playing their home games
in the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium rather than Camp Nou
which is being redeveloped.
It’s not the best or most atmospheric venue and
that could be problematic.
They are also going to need to restructure the midfield
after the departure of long-serving Sergio Busquets.
Ilkay Gündogan is a good signing from Manchester City
but he’s a different kind of midfielder
while little has been done to address a forward line
that wasn’t the most fluent last season and
will soon be weakened with Ousmane Dembele set to move to PSG.

Cadiz usually appear to have one of the weakest squads
in LaLiga at this time of year and this season is no exception.
They’ve lost first team regulars Theo Bongonda and
Pacha Espino while key goalkeeper
Conan Ledesma is also reportedly keen on a move.
Their main signings Gonzalo Escalante and Sergi Guardiola
were already at the club on loan last season so right now
they look considerably weaker than they were.
There’s still time for fresh additions but funds are always tight
in Cadiz and Sergio may find keeping them in the league
for another season a really tough challenge.

Despite beating Barcelona on the final day to survive last season,
Celta Vigo have dispensed with coach Carlos Carvalhal
and appointed Rafa Benitez.
As one of the best known Spanish coaches and
a two-time LaLiga winner with Valencia,
it’s a major coup for Celta and we could see better things
from them this season.
Defensively there are some solid foundations and
they’ve so far managed to hold onto key young midfielder Gabri Veiga.
Jonathan Bamba is also a really exciting addition on a free transfer
from Lille so there is optimism in Galicia
that Celta could have a much improved season.

Jose Bordalas returned as coach at the back end
of the 2022/23 season and kept Getafe up and
he has since agreed a deal to remain in charge.
That’s good news for Getafe and should help them tighten up
defensively but a lack of goals could be a major problem
in the first half of the season.
That’s because key striker Enes Unal, who has scored 45%
of the club’s league goals across the last two seasons,
is absent with a serious ACL injury
which will keep him out until at least December.
With their summer business focusing on converting loans
into permanent transfers, there’s not much to get excited
about and another season of struggle is likely.

Girona did brilliantly on their return to LaLiga last season,
narrowly missing out on a European place.
They’ve been weakened by the end of loan spells
for the likes of Taty Castellanos and Rodrigo Riquelme,
so some rebuilding will need to be done.
However they look to have recruited quite well
with experienced Dutch international Daley Blind
an eye-catching signing while Barca youngster
Pablo Torre is another bright prospect
who could shine on loan at Montilivi.
They really need to find a new striker to replace Castellanos
who scored 13 goals last term but if they can do that,
a mid-table finish is certainly possible again.

Granada were promoted as Segunda Division champions
but with the top 5 teams only separated by 4 points,
they weren’t much better than the rest.
They were very strong at home where they didn’t lose a game
and turning Los Carmenes into some kind of fortress again
will be key to their survival hopes.
They’ve been hampered in the transfer market by having
to fulfil obligatory purchase clauses
for Shon Weissman and Famara Diedhiou,
two players who contributed little to their promotion.
Much will depend on whether strike duo Myrto Uzuni
and Jose Callejon can perform at the top level
but it’s hard to see them not being in a relegation battle.

Las Palmas won automatic promotion alongside Granada
but I can see them faring slightly better.
They’ve a really clear identity in terms of how they play football
with a possession-based approach
under former Barca B team boss Garcia Pimienta.
That may not always see them succeed up against better teams
this season, but they’ve made some smart additions already and
in playmaker Jonathan Viera they have a high quality midfielder
who is capable of deciding tight matches, even at a higher level.
A bottom half finish is almost guaranteed,
but they look capable of avoiding the drop.

Mallorca achieved an impressive 9th place last season,
their best finish in eleven years,
however they’ve lost a couple of key men this summer.
Holding midfielder Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta has joined Athletic Club
on a free transfer while impressive youngster Kang-in Lee
has moved to PSG. The good news is that they did receive
a large €22m fee for the Korean international
which is helping them to reinvest in other areas of the team.
A major signing has just been announced with striker Cyle Larin
joining from Real Valladolid. He could partner top scorer
Vedat Muriqi in attack and the duo should deliver goals,
although a lack of creativity may see them drop back
into the higher end of the bottom half.

That can cause problems for smaller clubs who qualify for Europe
and I would expect Osasuna to fall back slightly in LaLiga.
However they’ve a coach who likes to rotate anyway
and their squad is relatively deep with not many outright stars
which also suggests they’ll be able to manage the challenge
of regular Thursday night football quite well.

and Santi Comesaña have all departed too and
not for a lot of money which means they’ve been unable
to bring much quality in to replace them.
The one positive for Rayo is that striker
Raul de Tomas has had a full pre-season and will be available
for the whole campaign unlike last year.
At his best, he’s a 20-goal striker and that may be a big factor
in keeping Rayo up.

He should fill the void in attack left by Alexander Sorloth
who won’t be returning while we can expect them
to buy a new midfielder after veteran David Silva was forced
to retire due to a serious injury suffered in pre pre-season.
It’s important they get that signing right
but we can expect more from the talented Mikel Oyarzabal
this year after his injury problems and
the same can be said of striker Umar Sadiq

as they rose from a relegation battle to a mid-table finish
and a remarkable seventh Europa League triumph.
Jose Luis Mendilibar has agreed to stay on as coach
for another season as a result but may struggle to recreate
those kinds of results over the course of a full campaign.
Sevilla should still massively improve on last season’s 12th place
finish which was a major underachievement.
However they may have to settle for one of the lesser
European places given this is a relatively old squad
that hasn’t been significantly added to this summer
with the only major signing being that of defender Loic Bade
who was on loan last term.
