Girona vs Real Betis



Girona are no longer serious title candidates with four straight away 
defeats effectively ending their challenge.


They’ve had the international break to regroup and remind themselves 
that they are still in a wonderful position that wildly exceeds 
their relatively modest pre-season aspirations.


The goal now is to hang on to a Champions League place and 
with a seven point advantage on 5th placed Atletico Madrid they 
ought to be capable of doing that.


Their struggles in recent weeks have come against direct football 
from Mallorca and Getafe who have exploited the aerial weakness 
in the Girona defence whilst defending in numbers to keep 
things tight at the other end.


This will be a very different kind of game though as Real Betis 
don’t really have the personnel to use those kinds of 
tactics and Manuel Pellegrini is much more of a possession based coach.


That may be good news for Michel and his team and they’ll also 
welcome the return to the home comforts of the Estadi Montilivi 
where their form has continued to be quite strong despite 
their poor recent away form.


Girona have claimed comfortable 2-0 and 3-0 wins in their
last home fixtures and a 79% win ratio at Montilivi in LaLiga this term is 
testament to how tough they are to play against in Catalonia.


They are missing Savio to suspension here which is clearly 
a big blow but otherwise all of their regular 
starters are expected to be available.


Real Betis’ injury situation has also improved over the past fortnight, 
although the game may still come too soon for 
Marc Bartra and Marc Roca.


Isco should be fit enough to come into the starting eleven after 
a lengthy absence which is a boost given 
how important he has been this term.


However he’s now got a bunch of new players around him in 
this Betis side and it may take a few weeks for everything to 
click into place and I can see Girona inflicting a fourth straight 
LaLiga defeat on the Seville club here.

Real Madrid are firmly in pole position in the title race with 
an eight point advantage on second placed Barcelona.


This in theory could be a tough game against an Athletic side 
that is riding high in fourth but the visitors will have at least half 
an eye on next weekend’s Copa del Rey Final against Mallorca.


Having not won either of Spain’s major competitions since the 1980’s, 
that’s going to be a simply massive occasion for everyone 
connected with the club.


While Ernesto Valverde is still likely to pick quite a strong lineup for
the trip to the Bernabeu, his players will be desperate to 
avoid injuries and on a subconscious level at least, that may 
have an impact on the level of their performance.


By contrast, Real Madrid will have more than a week after this game 
until their next fixture which is the first leg of their Champions League 
tie against Manchester City.


Given they still have to play Barcelona, they’re not quite at the point 
where they’re able to ease off in the league so we can expect 
a fully committed performance from the home team.


They are hampered by the absence of Vinicius Junior who
has been their best player in recent weeks but is suspended here.


That setback is balanced out though by the return of Jude Bellingham 
who has missed their last two games due to a ban of his own.


Joselu is likely to come into the starting eleven and while his skillset is 
very different to that of Vinicius, his return of 14 goals is 
really impressive for a back-up player and Los Blancos should 
still have more than enough attacking quality on the pitch to 
pose problems for this Athletic defence.


The Basques are making a really strong push for Champions League 
qualification and they are now only marginal underdogs in 
the race with Atletico Madrid for fourth place.


However a return of five wins and four defeats from 14 away games 
this season in LaLiga is testament to the reality that they don’t 
always convince on their travels.


With such a big match to come next week, they may struggle to 
get anything from what’s likely to be the toughest 
game of their season to date.

Villarreal vs Atletico Madrid


This might just be the pick of the matchday 30 games with a resurgent 
Villarreal hoping to do further damage to Atletico Madrid’s 
hopes of finishing in the top four.


The Yellow Submarine suddenly have European aspirations of their own 
having won their last four league games.


Much of the credit for their turnaround has to go to Marcelino 
who took his time to get his ideas across, but is now getting 
much more out of these players than either of his predecessors 
this season managed.


Some useful January additions have helped, but this is still largely 
the same squad that was so badly misfiring earlier in the season.


Reports suggest there may have been fractures in the dressing room, 
particularly during Quique Setien’s reign, but Marcelino appears to 
have done a good job of unifying things behind the scenes.


Defensively, they still have their vulnerabilities which they may look to 
further address in the summer transfer market, 
but they’ve been one of the most dangerous teams in 
the division in the final third.


The stunning form of Alexander Sorloth has been a big reason for that 
with the Norwegian registering eight goals and three assists in 
all competitions already in 2024.


He and strike partner Gerard Moreno should give an unconvincing 
Atletico Madrid defence plenty to worry about here.


Diego Simeone’s team continues to be a difficult side to analyse.


At their best, they’re a match for the very best, with two victories over 
Real Madrid this season and a Champions League knockout 
win over Serie A leaders Inter testament to that.


However this is also a team that has lost 50% of their away games in 
LaLiga and one that surprisingly capitulated to a 3-0 
home defeat against Barcelona in their most recent league game.


Given that away record, it’s hard to feel too 
confident about their chances here.


To make matters worse, both Rodrigo De Paul and Nahuel Molina are 
suspended while the likes of Saul and Alvaro Morata are 
clearly very low on confidence right now with the latter booed off 
by his own fans on Tuesday night as Spain drew 3-3 in an international 
friendly against Brazil.


That leaves Atletico Madrid very reliant on Antoine Griezmann for 
attacking inspiration but unless the Frenchman truly fires, 
I can see this going the way of the home team.


Prediction: Villarreal Win

This is the first game of matchday 30 and perhaps the most important.


Cadiz are five points from safety after losing their last game and 
they desperately need to win this match at home against 
one of the only two sides below them.


We’ve seen enough of an improvement under Mauricio Pellegrino in 
recent weeks to suggest they’re capable of doing that.


Granada sacked coach Alexander Medina during the international break 
and have re-appointed Jose Ramon Sandoval who took 10 points 
from four games to steer the club to safety during a dramatic 
ending to the 2014/15 season.


That was nearly a decade ago though and he’s not achieved 
a great deal of success since.


The task this time is also far greater with Granada 13 points from 
safety having won just twice all season, so I’m not expecting 
any great escape this time around.


We may get some kind of reaction from the Granada players to 
the change, but I can still see Cadiz just edging this 
with home advantage.


Prediction: Cadiz Win

Sevilla travel to the Coliseum after a disappointing home defeat 
against Celta Vigo last time out which brought to an end 
their recent upturn in form.


Sevilla are still in the relegation picture and things may get worse 
this weekend given how strong Getafe are at home.


They’ve still only lost once at the Coliseum in the league since
Pepe Bordalas returned as coach towards the end of last season.


While losing top scorer Borja Mayoral to injury was a significant blow, 
they still carried enough of a goal threat to defeat high flying 
Girona last time out which will give them confidence heading into this.


Sevilla’s forwards Isaac Romero and Youssef En-Nesyri have been 
in good form and have largely carried them through 
the past couple of months but they may not get a great deal of service
in this game with Getafe rarely giving up many chances at home.


Another narrow home victory could be the outcome for Bordalas’ side.

Almeria vs Osasuna


Matchday 29 was a cause for celebration in Eastern Andalusia 
as Almeria finally won their first league game of the season.


A 1-0 victory at Las Palmas in their first match under Pepe Mel 
removed the possibility of them becoming the first ever team to 
go through a full season in the Spanish top flight without winning.


It’s actually just one defeat in six now for Almeria who had largely 
been playing well even prior to the trip to Gran Canaria.


Undoubtedly they should be feeling more positive about life now and 
I wouldn’t be surprised if they backed that up with another win.


They face an Osasuna side that was rocked by coach Jagoba Arrasate’s 
announcement this week that he’d be leaving the club 
after six years at the end of the season.


LaLiga’s second longest serving coach has done a brilliant job in 
Pamplona, but this hasn’t been the most convincing 
season in his long reign.


They’ve been heavily reliant on Ante Budimir for goals and opposing 
teams know that if they can keep the Croatian striker quiet, 
they’ve a really good chance of getting the better of this Osasuna side.


Prediction: Almeria Win

A bit like Athletic, Mallorca’s players may also have one eye on 
next weekend when they travel to Seville for the Copa del Rey Final.


That may have a small impact on Javier Aguirre’s team selection with 
cup goalkeeper Dominik Greif potentially getting a runout, 
but even without any cup distractions 
this would be a tough fixture for Mallorca.


They’ve only won one away league game this season, 
losing eight while Valencia have the best home record 
outside of the top five.


Ruben Baraja’s side are missing captain Jose Luis Gaya to injury 
again which is a significant blow but Hugo Guillamon is available again 
and they look capable of winning the midfield battle in this game.


They’re not a team that creates loads of chances, 
but I can see them getting just enough service to Hugo Duro and 
Roman Yaremchuk to claim a narrow win.


Prediction: Valencia Win

Barcelona went into the international break on a real high after 
impressive wins over Napoli and Atletico Madrid 
which have suddenly given their season a much more positive outlook.


They are still very much outsiders in the title race but I can’t see 
them having too many problems collecting three points here to 
maintain a degree of pressure on Real Madrid.


Lamine Yamal was outstanding for Spain on Tuesday against Brazil, 
further underlining his status as one of the most exciting 
16 year olds we’ve ever seen in LaLiga, although Xavi could opt to 
rest him here as he attempts to manage the young winger’s workload.


Even without him, Barca ought to have too much for a Las Palmas 
side that had been overachieving, but is now winless in five after 
a defeat against the previously winless Almeria last time out.


They don’t have enough quality in the final third to suggest 
they’ll cause too many problems for an improving Barcelona defence 
that has been boosted by the emergence of 17 year old Pau Cubarsi.


Prediction: Barcelona 2-0 Las Palmas

Celta Vigo vs Rayo Vallecano


This is another really important game near the bottom between 
the most likely relegation candidates outside of the current 
bottom three.


Both won last time out, with Claudio Giraldez enjoying a flying start 
as Celta boss with a 2-1 win at Sevilla while Rayo claimed their 
first win since appointing Iñigo Pérez at home to Betis.


This is likely to be quite a close game between two relatively 
evenly matched sides but I fancy Celta’s extra firepower could be 
the difference here.


They played well in Seville, creating plenty of opportunities and 
Giraldez’s 3-4-2-1 system appeared to work quite well.

I expect both teams to achieve their goals, but this game looks more 
likely to go the way of the visitors.


La Real struggled with the demands of league football combined 
with two cup competitions during the early part of 2024, 
but it feels like they’ve turned a corner with back-to-back 
league wins heading into the international break and a fortnight’s 
rest would have done them no harm given the volume of games 
they’ve had to play.


They’ve lost Brais Mendez to a season-ending injury 
which is a setback but this is a good opportunity for 20 year old 
Russian midfielder Arsen Zakharyan to get a run of games in midfield 
and further settle into life in LaLiga.


Alaves haven’t been in great form with only one win in their last 
seven and they may fall just short here.

appointed Granada boss Jose Ramon Sandoval and that should help 
generate a bit more positive energy and noise from the crowd which 
ought to help the players 
who have looked short on belief in recent weeks.


We’ve seen a big difference between the level of Valencia’s 
performances away when compared to at Mestalla 
where they are so strong.


Particularly without their experienced captain Jose Luis Gaya, 
this young Valencia team may continue to struggle on the road and 
I wouldn’t be surprised if they ended up falling to defeat 
here assuming Sandoval is able to get some kind of reaction 
from these Granada players.
