Everton v Burnley 


Burnley are second-bottom but picking up points. 


As they prepare to host this bottom-of-the-table clash 
against the last team they beat in the league way back 
in December, Everton are in free-fall and do not need 
to give the relegation-battling Clarets any further encouragement.


Six points from their last four games have given Burnley hope, 
suggested their Premier League stay is not over just yet and 
that they might be able to string together the sort of run 
of results required to get out of danger.


Were it not for some questionable decisions
- including one at Chelsea which earned 
manager Vincent Kompany a red card and FA charge
- they would have had four more points and 
be within touching distance of safety.


As it is, they are still six points off 
but have finally given themselves a fighting chance in the last month.


As for Everton and former Burnley boss Sean Dyche 
it seems increasingly like only the failures of others 
are going to keep them up right now. 


It is now 13 league games without a win for Everton 
following their midweek draw at Newcastle. 


They have not had a winless run this bad since 1957, 
are not far off breaking their pre-World War II all-time record 
of 14 league games without a win and 
their post points deduction resurgence feels 
like a distant memory.


No matter what they try they just cannot 
get the crucial three points they need to turn the corner.


They are six points above the bottom three 
but with a game in hand which may help. 

That is only if they can win it though.


A rare positive for Everton this week came in the shape 
of a goal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin at long last.


He had not scored for Everton for 23 games, 
a run dating all the way back to October. 


His penalty at Newcastle ended that drought 
and earned Everton a point.

during lockdown springs to mind.


So too do two, costly end-of-season home defeats 
in successive years 2022 and 
2023 against the Seagulls for the Gunners. 


But whatever has gone before this Arsenal team feel different 
and much more capable of navigating any obstacles.


They remain firmly in the title mix and 
look all set to last the pace and take the race to the wire.


Further evidence of that came against Luton. 


Mikel Arteta took the chance to rotate his team, 
handing rare starts to Oleksandr Zinchenko, Thomas Party, 
Emile Smith Rowe, Reiss Nelson and Leandro Trossard.


But Arsenal did not miss a beat, 
reeling off another win to maintain their position second in the table.


An additional bonus was the rests they were able 
to give to some of their key men, not least Bukayo Saka, 
the battered and bruised winger earning 
a well-deserved opportunity to put his feet up for the night.


Expect him back against Brighton. 


That should be a stiffer test for the Gunners, 
especially with it being on the road where greater risk awaits.


Brighton are also a more than capable side too 
despite their inconsistent campaign 
which has been impacted by the additional workload of Europe.


Now out of Europa League for this season, 
they remain contenders to qualify again for next year 
meaning there is still plenty to play for.


All eyes will be on their manager Roberto De Zerbi 
for the remainder of the campaign too. 


Linked with the Liverpool and 
Bayern Munich job the last few weeks of the season 
will be his chance to underline his credentials for a big-club job.


Coming up with a plan to disrupt Arsenal’s title charge 
would certainly make his admirers take further note.

with their big rivals, the manner of the exit inflicted 
by United would only have given them even more.


A last-minute of extra-time winner
that secured not just a 4-3 win and semi-final place 
but the bragging rights, dashing Klopp’s hopes 
of winning four trophies in his final Liverpool season 
in the process too.


As gutting for Liverpool and Klopp 
as it was joyful for United who did get their own taste 
of last-gasp heartbreak with their incredible defeat to Chelsea 
on Thursday night by the same score. 


Consolation for Liverpool could yet come in the Premier League. 


Manchester City’s draw with Arsenal 
after Liverpool beat Brighton saw the title initiative swing 
back the Reds’ way, putting them in control of their destiny.


Win all their games and the crown will be theirs.


How Erik Ten Hag must envy the consistency Klopp 
has been able to inspire in his Liverpool side.


United’s Jekyll and Hyde nature has been on display 
again either side of the international break.


From that victory against Liverpool to one 
of their worst performances of the season
- amongst much competition - at Brentford, 
followed by another sloppy showing at Chelsea.


Yet more defensive injuries - now to Lisandro Martinez, 
Victor Lindelof, Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans
- will not aid their slim chances of a top five, 
let alone top four finish. 


Ten Hag will have to hope his players can rouse themselves

After two draws against their biggest rivals for the title, 
normal service was resumed for City against Aston Villa.


A Phil Foden-inspired display earned a 4-1 win 
which provided a reminder, if needed, of how easily City 
can brush aside most sides in the Premier League 
with fourth-placed Villa their next nearest challenges 
behind Liverpool and Arsenal. 


City’s display was ominous for a Palace side still waiting 
for their second win under Oliver Glasner. 


So too was the fact City cruised past Villa without Erling Haaland, 
Kevin de Bruyne, Kyle Walker and John Stones 
who all stayed put on the bench rested for future challenges.


If that is not Palace then it could be Real Madrid 
in the Champions League next week. 


Palace will certainly hope so.

from the first game between these sides earlier in the season. 


Former Brentford striker Ollie Watkins had an animated spat 
with a fan after scoring the winner against his old club 
while Neal Maupay and Emiliano Martinez clashed 
before Boubacar Kamara’s red card. 


Watkins and Martinez will hope to be fit
after missing the defeat at City. 


In a certain boost John McGinn will be available 
again after his three-game suspension.

It was just a shame the improvement only came 
after a rare first-half triple substitution and

If the first part of their defeat at Nottingham Forest 
was forgettable there was at least something to cling 
to in the way they responded in the second half in their bid 
to claw something out of the game. 


That was ultimately unsuccessful 
but expect them to be at it from the off 
against Fulham after Silva’s drastic measures. 


Newcastle will be depleted again 
after midweek confirmation that Tino Livramento and 
Miguel Almiron will miss around a month 
while Kieran Trippier will not make the trip to Fulham.

The second and rearranged meeting saw Bournemouth stage 
a stunning fightback from 3-0 down at half-time to win 4-3. 


That result has been part of their recent resurgence
- five games unbeaten - which has left them within sight 
of their best Premier League points tally of 46
and the European places. 


Injury-hit Luton’s concerns are at the other end 
after another defeat at Arsenal during 
which they did not disgrace themselves but still finished pointless.


That has often been the case and the games are running out. 


This is at least one they may look at and be hopeful 
of claiming some points to boost their survival hopes.

One of the most important, Matheus Cunha, returned 
at Turf Moor so should be even closer
to full fitness against West Ham. 


This game represents something of a dilemma 
for Hammers boss David Moyes. 


With the discontent about him never far 
from the surface he always needs results and 
West Ham haven’t won in the league for a month. 


But they also have the first leg other Europa League quarter-final 
against Bayer Leverkusen coming up next week.

rock-bottom Sheffield United, 
who put up a fight at Liverpool but were eventually beaten? 


Nobody would say so with too much confidence. 


At least they head to Yorkshire on a high thanks 
to Palmer’s latest display of heroics.

Nottingham Forest carry significant threat and
